NHS broken nose
Posted: 05-22-08 13:28pm

A few years ago I was playing rugby and managed to get hit in the face by another player shin. My nose was incredibly sore afterwards but my coach assured me it wasn't broken. After swelling up a bit, a few days after I noticed a rather prominent bump in my nasal bone. Ever since I've had problems with my breathing and occasionally I would get a small whistling sound when I breathed in, which was rather embarrassing at times.

I've recently started learning to drive and wear glasses, but since my nose is sensitive now I can wear them for no longer than 10 minutes before they become discomforting. What can the NHS do for me, if anything, to relieve some of the discomfort? Is this sort of thing covered by the NHS? Or will it require plastic surgery to correct and cost money?

Thanks in advance

Hello!

I would have thought the NHS would cover you for any corrective surgery to your nose because it would not be for purely cosmetic reasons. Your best bet is to make an appointment with your GP and explain your problems.

By the way, I'm assuming you are a British citizen. I'm confused because a previous post of yours talks about health insurance and dollars...

Thank you for your speedy reply and I'll be contacting my GP tomorrow to arrange an appointment =). Hopefully it will all checkout. What sort of things can they do to correct the bump? Do they simply re-break it and set it correctly?

P.S. Yeah sorry about that, I'm actually using a bugmenot account to post this thread since I needed a quick answer. Sorry for the confusion.

I just googled bugmenot, very interesting lol!

As for what they'll do to correct your nose, I'm not sure to be honest. Your GP will have the answers.

Alternatively, have you tried NHS Direct? http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/

Great idea thanks. Just ried it out now but can't seem to find any mention of broken noses =|. Only thing that mentioned it was rhinoplasty, which is a bit OTT in my case to be honest haha. I was hoping they'd have a section on nose resetting but oh well, guess I'll just have to wait until my appointment with the GP.

I've been googling around and al lot of forums seem to suggest that they were rarely do anything about it if the nose has healed for more than 2 weeks, which in my case of nearly 5 years isn't helpful! My father seems to think that they simply put you under local anasetetic and manually break the bone using a blunt instructment like a mallet, which doesn't sound at all comforting... I'd hedge my bets on whether they actually perform such procedures though. I think I'd rather be totally knocked out than faint haha!
