OGTT test ?
Posted: 07-18-08 18:53pm

Hello,
i'm new here and I just had a ogtt test to check for diabetes. I had a A1C back in April and it was 6.5 and my doctor says it was ok. My mother had diabetes and my sister has diabetes. I do have some of the symptoms like thirst and etc. I did get the test results from the OGTT but I do not understand them. The 1 hr nonfasting is high and I don't understand that one. Thanks for any help that you can give me. I also have heart disease and just had a stent put in.

Fasting Glucose 105
1/2 HR glucose 199
Glucose 1 HR Nonfasting 220
2 HR Glucose 136

Those results are quite common.

The fasting glucose is perfectly fine, but at the one hour mark it appears high and at two hours it's only just under the benchmark for type 2 diabetes.

You probably wouldn't be diagnosed with anything depending on what country you're in. But you may be told you're at risk of developing type 2 and so a healthy diet and lifestyle is important. With your mother and sister being diagnosed then you're likely to be at risk.

Regarding the higher reading at 1hr, at least from my doctors point of view, this isn't a concern taking into consideration that you did just drink 75g of glucose(!)

At this point I'd follow advise for a healthier diet and lifestyle if there's room for improvement Smile

What has your doctor said regarding the test?

My results are very similar to yours, fasting - 72, 1hr mark - 243, 2hr - 133. I'm actually diagnosed reactive hypoglycemic (2.5hr reading would be around 32) so diabetes isn't a worry at this point. But I am at risk as my 2hr reading is close to the bench mark for type 2 (around 146 here) and my mother and aunts are type 2 too.

I haven't had a response from the doc yet, that's one of the reasons I have been looking for an answer. I also had a A1C done in April which was 6.5 and he said that it was ok, but the American Diabetes says anything above 6.0 is considered diabetes. So I don't know.

Personally I think it seems you're at a stage where you're in danger of developing type 2, but aren't quite there.

Bare in mind that different doctors and associations will have varying guidelines. They're all close, yet often slightly different. There is a "pre diabetes" condition known in the US apparently - I don't know much about this but it's like diabetes onset from what I can gather - not quite there but near the bench mark. Maybe your doctor will talk to you about this.

As I said I think the best thing you can do at this point is improve your diet and lifestyle where possible.

According to Canadian Diabetes, anything equal or lesser than 7.0 on A1C is good. My mother has type 2 and so do I. They won't do anything unless your results are a lot higher. It is important to keep a healthy diet and exercise. Your test results seem in range. You should keep checking though. With your family history you are at risk.
