Pain after a filling in molar Posted: 03-09-08 23:26pm
I got a silver filling in my upper left
molar a month ago, and there is still
constant pain. It is very sensitive to hot
and cold and if I do not take Ibuprofen or
some form of Advil there is a dull and
constant pain. I have an appointment with
my dentist in two days but I don't know if
what he says will help me out. Is this
normal to happen? Do you think this could
be the possible result of me needing a
root canal? Anything that can help, please
leave.

this occurs to some people when the
caries was deep, maybe your dentist would
check the occlussion or polish the amalgam
(the silver) or he could take and xray to
see if there are signs of possible root
canal treatment but you should go to your
dentist because he is the one that can
help you

Hi, ekf522.
I also had severe pain in my jaw area
after a filling as well as EXTREME
sensitivity to cold (heat, as well, but I
seemed to notice it more with the cold)
and ended up on vicodin before I found any
relief from the pain.
It turned out that I had a tooth that was
'dying' and ended up needing a root canal
to take care of it (the root canal was
painless, both during and afterwards and
the pain I'd been experiencing stopped
immediately...).
This isn't to say that this is what's
happening with you, too, but it's
absolutely possible. I think prdent1 is
right; I think you need a dentist to check
it out (be adamant about having them check
for the need for a root canal; my dentist
insisted that I had TMD and would not
check; it wasn't until I finally got a
second opinion that I found relief) and
it's great that you already have an
appointment.
