It is very common to experience both types of pain. What the jaw pain that you might feel is called templar mandibular joint pain also know as tmj. This is caused when you grind your teeth or if you are feeling tense. With tension, it can bring on all kinds of pain even headaches. When I was 17, I had my jaw broken and realigned which from time to time causes the tmj pain as well. A few years ago I went to my dentist and told her about the pain that I was experiencing along with the constant headaches and she made me a bite plate to be worn while I am sleeping. You may not even be aware that you grind your teeth while you are sleeping. Next time you are at the dentist, ask them to check it out for you. There may be signs that you do grind them by certain places that are more worn down more than others.

Thank you very much for your reply, I have read about tmj and visited the board on here and sometimes wondered if I may have it!

I am just replying to your problem with your jaw, and I have exactly the same prablem. About 10 months ago I was suffering really badly with an aching jaw and face and every time I had this I had a headache or a migraine at the same time. One day I mentioned this to my boyfriend who is a dental technician and he said it was definately something called 'broocsism' which is where you grind your teeth at night whilst asleep. Your dentist will be able to tell whether you have this straight away just my looking at your back teeth because you probably will have worn them down slightly. I was given something called a soft splint or a mouth guard and this helps me a lot. My jaw hardly ever aches now and I have less headaches. My advice would be to go to your dentist straight away and get them to check it out. They will do x rays and all sorts. They will then take a mold of your teeth and make you a splint which only takes a few days. Oh by the way my dentist tried to rip me off by saying I needed a hard splint which cost around £350 and I knew that was wrong cause my boyfrind makes them for a living and they normally cost around £25, so dont let your dentist rip you off.
