parents response

im only 16 and ive been self injuring for quite some time. I noticed that typically when parents (not just mine, but most that i know) discover that their child is self injuring, they often react with anger and punishment.

examples: Severe grounding, no longer being able to participate in extra-curricular activities, unable to vist friends, a change in schools, and a lot of yelling.

ive seen all these reactions and many more like it. Why is it parents deliver punishment instead of help?

In my opinion

My opinion is that parents often don't understand self injury. All they can think about is their babies hurting themselves on purpose. They don't think about why.
Maybe if the child goes to their parents asking for help or therapy, it would be handled appropriately.
These kinds of problems weren't as prevalent in their generation, so they just don't understand.
