Q: passing out while pregnant

I just got back from the hospital. This sure has been a busy month with ER visits!!! But i passed out when i was waiting in line to check out after getting some maternity clothes. When we got to hospital they did tones of blood work, hooked all these slimy things up to my body with cords (they said it was to check my heart. I dont know what that would have to do with anything?). And they hooked me up to IV and gave me a shot of something that made my mouth super salty. But the dr. said that i probly passed out b/c the baby pushes everything and makes blood flow decrease to your brain and makes you pass out. Does that make any sense to anyone?? He told me that it could and probly would happen again so he gave me symptoms to watch for. Im still confused though about what the dr. had said.

Anybody know what exactly he meant?? Thanks for any advice!

I've never fainted but apparently because you get dizzy because your body is pumping 25-25% more blood through your body and its trying desperately to keep up with your expanding circulatory system. I was worried because I get dizzy often but my doctor told me actually fainting is fairly uncommon, although i guess in your case that wasn't true! I can't imagine a doctor telling me that fainting often would be normal though.

Do you maybe have anemia? Was your blood sugar though?

Oh ya also the blood vessels open wider and pump blood faster to your baby but it takes longer coming back to you, and your doctor is right, that the growing uterus can put pressure on blood vessels causing the same kind of problem

I fainted, a few weeks ago, i landed on my bed on my side, but I didn't go to the er, I just waited till I saw my dr. Its common in pregnancy

they said my blood sugar was fine. They didnt say anything about anemia. would they have tested for that through blood work? They took 8 tubes of blood. I dont know what all they tested for though. Yea ive gotten dizzy before..but today was the first time ive passed out. Yea my ob told me the same thing when i was in my first trimester about it being normal to be dizzy. She also told me what you said...its uncommon to actually pass out. Thats y im confused about what he told me today. He didnt even have any concern when he told me it would probly happen again. just told me things to watch for. Ally how did you feel before you passed out??? Did you have any kind of symptoms? And how did you feel afterwards???

On a sidenote i would definitely suggest heading to the doctors, if not the ER that day, then at least the next day for an appt if you do faint. Its usually normal but for whatever reason my doctor always asks me if i've actually fainted and seems concerned about it.

Did you feel like you were going to faint trijos or did it just kind of happen really quickly? Like you said its weird that he was so nonchalant about it. Maybe he was just an ER doctor who is not as experienced with pregnancy as your OBGYN

And im sure they would definitely have tested for anemia, its fairly common to have during pregnancy.

i was fine then all a sudden felt hot...started getting clammy, hearing went foggy, then i just woke up on the floor. It was sooo weird. Ive never had anything like that happen before. I ate before i went shopping, so its not like i needed to eat anything. I also stay well hydrated, i carry bottled water with me everywhere. He still said i seemed a little dydrated today, thats y they did the IV. But im still not sure what that shot was that they gave me. I wish i would have asked, there was just sooo much going on around me that i didnt think about it at the time. Also...what exactly is anemia??? I know it has to do with blood, but im not sure exactly what.

That is weird. Sounds like the salty shot was to boost your electrolytes from possibly being dehydrated etc.

Anemia is having really low iron. 20% of women have it during pregnancy. I have it, apparently it usually develops near the beginning of your second trimester. I just thought something was weird because I had been feeling SO tired and dizzy, and had awful headaches. People often faint often with it as well thats why i asked if you might have it.

hmm...i guess the shot makes since then if that is what it was for. Actually now that you say that i think ingi might have mentioned something like that in the beggining of my preg. when i was tired all the time. If i had it im sure they would have known by now with all the blood they have been taking. Are you feeling better from your whole thing that was going on?

I was in the shower, and I started feeling dizzy and lightheaded so i stepped out (water still running) walked into my room ( which is right next to the bathroom) and collapsed on my bed. I was out for like a minute or two. It was weird, and so I called my dr. and his nurse said when I come in to tell him about it, but she said judging by the fact I landed on my side on my bed everything should be fine. So when I went in the next day he let me hear the heart beat little one was doing great

yea i would get those episodes in the shower. I think b/c your body heat rises so quickly. I never actually passed out but i would start to feel light headed like you and dizzy. What was your babys h/r. mine was in the 140's again today when they checked it.

um...the first time at 11 weeks it was 170. But at 15 weeks it was 145. lol maybe we're having the same thing

lol...maybe. I know my babys h/r was 180 the first time we heard it at 6 wks...and then at 14 it was 140 and today it was in the 140's. The hospital wouldnt give me a def. number. They said they just go by what range its in. I thought that was stupid. It makes it sound like they dont know what they are talking about.

i asked them and thats what the lady told me lol. Josh was yelling at me the whole time anyways b/c he said i was being mean to everyone. He said i was even worse though with the two guys that were taking my blood.

nope, they never will either. I told him thats y god didnt make men be preg...b/c they wouldnt be able to handle it. He agreed lol

I'm glad you're okay! That sounds really scary.

It's not uncommon to pass out if your blood sugar dips or if your blood pressure drops. Try to keep a high-energy snack in your purse, like some nuts or maybe some pretzels. If you feel yourself start to get a bit woozy, op a few in your mouth and try to find a place to sit down for a few minutes.

Remember, your body is busy building a whole other person. You might need to baby it a little bit!
