Post nasal drip ? Posted: 06-18-08 01:43am
Alright, I have had pretty bad breath for
the last couple of months and saw my
family doctor fairly recently. He
diagnosed me with post nasal drip and
prescribed Nasonex.
I have been using Nasonex for about 3
weeks and have noticed little improvement.
I keep very good dental hygiene (brush and
floss twice a day), use a 'tongue
scraper', drink lots of water, and have
even started with nasal irrigation... none
of which seems to have done anything.
Anyway, to make a long story short, I got
curious tonight and got out a flashlight
and looked way back into my mouth. What I
noticed was a whitish coating on my soft
palette with about 3 small pumps (kind of
like zits). I could see another 'zit' on
one of my tonsils. As I was poking around,
I noticed that this area (very back of
throat/mouth) is the source of the odor.
I looked a little further, and noticed on
the very back of my throat (I believe its
called the 'pharynx' if i am not mistaken)
had thick whitish mucus on it. (I assume
this to be the post nasal drip?)
At the risk of self diagnosing, it seems
to me that I might have post nasal drip
with tonsiliths? But then what is the
white coating and bumps on the soft
palette? and what can I do to treat this?
I wouldn't make a big deal out of this
kind of thing normally, its just that this
kind of thing really hurts a person's
quality of life. Its just sort of
embarrassing.
*and you can rule out STD/Drug/Steroid
use, i don't do any of that stuff.
I truly appreciate any help/advice you
might give.

You may have tonsil stones which are
caused by a build up of bacteria and mucus
in the back of your throat. They are those
little balls that you hack up sometimes
and they have an awful smell to them and
can cause bad breath. I would suggest
gargling with warm salt water to loosen
them up.
Might possible be candida albicans
overgrowth...with is technical for yeast
infection. On the tongue, this white
coating is called "thrush". I'm not sure
if you can experience this on the throat,
though. I'd suggest that you get a swab
investigated at your GP's office or with
an ENT. The foul breath can also be
caused by candida or intestinal issues.
It would be good to isolate the bacteria
and identify it, though. If you do, let
me know cause it can help me!

I started gargling salt water several
times a day, and have noticed improvement
immediately after I do it. Although, the
symptoms return fairly quickly, I figure
that this might be because I just
started... I will give it a few days.
I'm not sure if I have oral thrush... my
doc just looked at my mouth about a month
or so ago and didn't see anything (not
that that means anything). But even still,
it seems that the first treatment in any
case is to see what salt water can get
you.
I will keep you guys posted. Thanks for
your help.

So, I started gargling tons of highly
concentrated salt water. (at least 4
times a day). At first, nothing really
happened, but I stuck with it. This
afternoon I gargled and then checked my
breath and inside of my mouth a few hours
later... I couldn't really find anything
unusual or any odor whatsoever. So it
looks like I might finally be cured.
I will probably continue to gargle with
salt water for a few more days for good
measure. Just to think, all these months
of suffering to be fixed in about 72
hours!
I also read today, that I should be eating
yogurt to make sure that all this salt
water doesn't kill the good bacteria, so I
guess I will give that a shot for good
measure.
Anyway, thanks so much for your help!
And for anyone else suffering for a
similar problem, that may stumble onto
this post, I did try gargling salt water a
while back when my symptoms first
appeared, but it had no effect. This time
however, I gargled salt water every few
hours and in a much higher concentration
and for a much longer time. So, my
suggestion is to keep with it and don't
let the bacteria or whatever is giving you
problems time to recover.
