I'm not very good at debating. I am
pro-choice and have had quite a few
interesting conversations with a friend
that is pro-life. She brings up the
'potential' of the child becoming
president or someone important. I know
most pro-lifers would agree with her, but
there is also another side to that. They
would have a much higher chance of being a
dead beat, breeding another unwanted
child, spreading disease, etc. Especially
if they are left in a orphanage and told
they are never wanted by anyone. Not
saying 100%, but in my opinion, it's more
likely they WILL NOT contribute to society
and become president.

Well, something like 1% of the entire US
population is in prison (just google "US
prison population" if you want details).
What percentage then have criminal
records? What percentage have a drug
addiction? Let's compare that to how many
presidents there are, or even research
scientists, teachers, nurses, doctors and
heck, garbage collectors because they are
contributing to society too. Similarly, an
economist has actually theorised that
legalised abortion is responsible for
about half the reduction in the crime rate
since 1985: http://chro

I'm thinking of a few presidents that
should have been in prison. And probaly
more of them did things we will never know
of..
I'm Pro-life. But I don't think a child
should not be aborted because they "might"
become president. I look at it as a fetus
developing into a human being.. and should
have a chace like I did.. Not what they
Might grow up to be.

I hate this pro life argument. It's so
dumb. that isn't the point at all! who
cares what it grows up to be?!?!?!?!?! It
is a human like me and you and deserves
the same rights. end of story.

lmao...omg. so funny
Anyway, a fetus has teh potential to
become anything. Good or bad. I think
the real fact we have to look at is what
is the potential for the child to have a
good, normal life?

I don't care for the potential argument
either, but to throw it back, what is the
potential of the woman who is facing an
unwanted pregnancy?

I can't remember if I said this somewhere
else or if it was, for some reason,
deleted but when it comes to potential
that is really not a valid argument
against abortion. Fourteen year olds have
the potential to legally buy alcohol.
Should we just start letting them now
anyway?

I agree. Otherwise we should also insist
that every woman is perpetually pregnant
-- pop one out and then start on the next.
Because every sperm is sacred, and every
potential human has to be given its
chance.
No, "potential" works pretty well as an
argument in favour of abortion (see my
earlier post), but not against.
Also, it is wrong to even say there would
be X number more human out there (and
yeah, like there is such a shortage
anyway), since so many of those who have
abortions go on to have other children,
many of which would not have been born if
the aborted one had. Completely spurious
argument.

That's why I don't judge off of potential.
I judge off of capabilities; and when the
fetus is capable of life, it has a RIGHT
to that life.
