Hi,

the first baby in our family to be born in a while is on her way right now, but she is only 31 weeks old! Will she be ok?

there is a very good chance the baby will be alright, a lot of babies pull through it will just require a stay in the nicu typically

possible problems to expect would be breathing problems, temperature controle problems, feeding problems, possible heart problems, etc (none of these are for sure and theres other things too, im just trying to let you know so your not taken by suprise, i dont know how much you know and dont know about preemies)

and expect the baby to be small and like i said to go to the nicu, and the nicu usualy has some serious rules regualrding who can visit when and what has to be done

premature birth also puts the baby at higher risk for sicknesses later on (like rsv)

all that being said i hope the baby comes out perfectly fine! Smile

Congrats on the baby! I'm sorry it's so soon Crying or Very sad

Just try to remember, preemies like to take roller coaster rides with their health. Meaning they'll be doing perfect for a couple days and then something else will hit (like Ingi, just trying to prepare you)

You'll be in my thoughts! Good Luck!

Thank-you for all of the helpful information. So far so good. My aunt said the baby weighs 3 pounds 18 ounces, but that's actually 4 pounds 2 ounces, isn't it? I must have not heard her correctly, or maybe she was so nervous she said it wrong. Or could she have said 3 pounds 8 ounces?

I'll ask her again later today when everyone is more relaxed.

Her baby shower is in a few weeks, so maybe the baby will be able to be there now? Or will she need to stay home for a while until her immune system builds up? Could she still be in the NICU by then?

I'll keep you all posted. Thanks again. Smile

That's a pretty good size either way. I think they have to be 5 pounds before they are aloud out of the NICU (correct me if I'm wrong please). They also have to keep their temperature and be able to eat (suck/swallow/breathe) before they are let out. Preemies are unpredictable. I'd say no less than 5wks, I've never heard of a baby going home before 36wk gestational age.

Boy or Girl? Name? Length? Keep us posted! And good luck!
