Protein in urine
Posted: 04-03-08 19:40pm

End of January I had some blood work done when changing to a new nurse practitioner. I called last week (end of March) to get the results. Her assistant told me there is a small amount of protein in the urine.

I have a friend who had some test strips for protein and when testing it yesterday (first part of April) it showed 3+ on the stick -- I'm assuming that it's been continuous for the past two months -- since end of January???

I know this is not a significant amount and when the office called with my results they did not say anything about any type of follow-up. Should I be concerned that this should be checked out further? Should there be follow-up?? I am type-2 diabetic, high blood pressure, etc..

Thanks

If you are concerned I would make another appointment and ask. See if they can go over the test results with you. Did they do a serum creatinine or creatinine clearance?

I agree with aflsh to make an appointment with your doctor, any amount of protein in the urine is a concern unless the doctor tells you what amount is normal for you.
Some people who take body building supplements have high amounts of protein in their urine (I know your not doing this but it's an example) or people who eat a high protein diet.
I'm not familiar with type 2 diabetes. I am sorry you are going to through this.

The doctor can order a 24 hour urine collection and then have blood drawn when you return to the lab with the urine to get a better understanding of what if anything is going with your kidneys. I know with diabetes you are more likely to produce uric acid which is a culprit for gout.

Keep us posted.

Thanks. The only kidney blood work the nurse practitioner ordered was the albumin in the urine. No other kidney tests were run. I'm not sure with the protein continuing in the urine if other tests would have been abnormal as well.

No, no body building or anything I know would be causing this.

Are you going to see a doctor to follow up on the protein?

Great, if you feel any pains or just uncertain as to see the doctor.
They have cancellation lists, (FYI) that's when another patient cancels and you can possibly get seen earlier.

Keep in touch..Smile
