Hi!
I was just trying to help my 12 year old
daughter who has had about 6 periods learn
to use a tampon. I was alarmed to see
vaginal skin protruding from her vagina.
It almost looked like what a new born baby
boy's shriveled up skin around his
testicles would look like.
She has not complained about any
discomfort. Occasionally she will get
itchy, but nothing out of the ordinary.
You know girl's her age as they develop
are extremely modest,so I tried to mask my
alarm. It just looked so strange to me.
Any advice or wisdom to share? She is a
very healthy girl. Her periods seem to be
pretty regular now. I will make an appt.
for her to see a gynecologist, but in the
meantime, can you soothe a mother's
concern?
Thanks!

This may just be the way her vagina looks.
I would not say anything to alarm her,
because girls can be VERY self conscious
about the way their bodies look,
especially down there. Every girl looks
different. This just sounds like extra
skin, which is no big deal at all. If she
is healthy, has normal periods, and
doesn't complain of any itching or
discomfort, then I think she is fine.
Since you have an appointment with a
gynecologist set up, (s)he will make sure
nothing is wrong. Maybe you could call
the doctor ahead of time and voice your
concerns so they know what to look for,
but I do think this is completely normal.
