Well, here's my story. I had sex about a
month ago, and contracted crabs from that
person. I felt itchy in my pubic region
and saw the lice and their eggs so went to
the doctor who prescribed me phenothrin
0.2% lotion.
That didn't work.
So, after reading about the condition and
treatments on the net, I went to the
pharmacy and bought some malathion 0.5%
liquid which worked and eradicated the
lice.
Now, this Saturday I had sex again, and I
think I may have caught crabs again. I say
this because I saw an egg glued to one of
my pubic hairs two days ago (didn't see
any live lice though). So I put on some
malathion and left it on for 12 hours as
instructed on Sunday (washed it off
yesterday morning), and it seems to have
done the trick (touch wood).
However, as of today, I discovered a louse
in my underwear, so I put it under a
magnifying glass, and it isn't moving, and
is a kind of crusty yellow-brownish
colour, rather than the whitish/reddish
colour they usually are.
Do you think the malathion application
worked? Or would you say it was
unsuccessful/ or the lice have developed
resistance (I haven't been itching, or
seen any LIVE lice yet though)?
Please help - I'm not sure whether or not
to visit the doctor to get something more
powerful like carbaryl, as the malathion
appears to have worked again. Does it
sound like it's worked? I've scanned my
pubic hair, leg hair, and abdomen hair
with a magnifying glass and haven't seen
anything, so should I assume that the
malathion worked again?
Thanks.

It sounds like it has worked. The louse
you found was dead. Shaving the affected
area will help to eliminate the mode of
transport for the lice. Keep checking for
the eggs and lice. They can be difficult
to treat. Wash your bed linens and
underwear in bleach. Bath towels could be
bleached as well. This will eliminate
reinfection if the lice are on bedding or
clothing.

Yes, you have to wash all linens and
clothing. It will continue to be a problem
if you do not take care of the eggs, even
though you have killed the lice. Continue
the meds - and you can even buy the
shampoo and spray at your local pharmacy.
Also, make sure it is not scabies that you
have contracted. I am sure your doctor
checked you for that as well.
