I have just been prescribed Flomaz for an
enlarged prostate. One of the rare
possible side effects is priapism. Since
taking the medicine I have had numerous
erections, but have not ejaculated.
Here's the question. Does priapism occur
after ejaculation or since I have had
erections that have subsided does that
mean I won't be affected by priapism? Or
is there still a chance that it could
affect me. I ahve been on the medication
for about a week. This may be stupid but
I would really like to know. Thanks in
advance.

Well, priapism is extremely rare,
especially in older men. You never
mentioned your age, so I'll give you a
general slant.
The good news is that Flomax does work for
enlarged prostates, but there are some
common side effects, which you can google.
Priapism, which is an erection that does
not subside and the blood does not flow
out of the penis. It is technically
possible for any erection to develop into
priapism, but not very likely.
Most doctors consider an erection of four
hours as dangerous, so even if it happens
you have time to get to the emergency room
and a doctor can administer treatment,
which will reduce the erection.
Of course, with any drug like Flomax,
there is always the possibility of a
detrimental side effect like this.
Priapism can occur before or after
ejaculation, but your erections that have
subsided probably have little to do with
whether you can be affected by priapism.
There is also still a chance you could get
it, although, you will have noticed most
side affects by the second or third week
of taking the drug.
I wouldn't worry until there is something
to worry about.
