rash after cancer surgery Posted: 04-20-08 11:46am
Hello,
My skin cancer was removed in September
and it still itches. Right after my
biopsy the skin around my shoulder started
itching with a rash. The doctor said it
isn't related but I'm not so sure. Is it
normal for a rash and for the surgical
site to stil be itching? Thanks

Does that place look like a reddish patch
or an irritated area?

They look like little red bumps scattered
around my shoulder blade. The surgery
spot looks like it is healing, but it
still itches even 7 months later. The doc
said it heals from the outside in and it's
the center that itches.

Complete healing of the skin takes time.
The healing process continues in the skin
for a full year.
Occasionally superficial skin nerves are
cut during surgery, which results in
localized numbness or loss of sensation to
a small area around the surgery site.
The nerves will grow back, but, the time it
takes vary.
As the healing process proceed tingling
and/or itching may be felt.
This may last 6 months or more after
surgery, but everyone is different and the
duration of these symptoms can vary
markedly among individuals.
