sac but no baby?
Posted: 06-28-08 14:25pm

I went to the doctor yesterday for a confirmation of pregancy. I was just guessing that i was around 7 wks pregant but i wasn't quite sure. They did an internal ultrasound and their was only a sac and saw no baby. the sac was only measuring 5wks two days. should i be worried? I am just praying that i was off on my dates and that i am really only 5wks pregant. they did my blood work and my HCG levels were at 4,787. is it normal to just see a sac? I am freaking out and crying...

don't worry. I had the same thing. My first docs appt I measured a little over 4 weeks and there was only a sac...then the second week he had me come in again, and there was STILL only a sac. I was freaking out just like you. Finally on the third week, third u/s we saw our little baby. I just gave birth to him on Monday, healthy, strong baby boy. Just give it time that little baby will show up on that screen and it'll be a happy day.

Try not to worry too much.. your dates could just be off by 2 weeks & if that's the case, your baby isn't big enough to see yet. Has your doctor scheduled you for another ultrasound in the next couple of weeks?

Yes, they scheduled another ultrasound for July 9th. So a little less then 2weeks. I am really nervous. The doctor said by then that we should definitely see something because if I'm 5wks and 2days I will be over 7 by then and should see something. It's going to be a long two weeks. I'm also goign back in on Monday to have my HCG levels tested again to make sure that my levels are increasing.. i'm praying they will since they were 4,787 yesterday. Isn't that pretty high to have a blighted ovum??

I just wanted to say best of luck with everything. I know on my transvaginal ultrasound at 6w 3d there was both an embryo and a sac visible, but apparently alot of women have trouble finding the baby. They say it's generally because the sac is so much larger that the baby is often hiding behind it. Just stay positive and hang in there until your ultrasound

The shape and location of the sac itself, and the presence of a yolksac are also important factors of a healthy early pregnancy. Usually when we see an empty sac once, we have the patient come in for a follow up within a week to 10 days. By then there usually should be a fetal pole and heart beat. A heart beat should be seen by 7 weeks most definately on vaginal ultrasound. Hopefully your dates were just a bit off causing for the empty sac. Good luck
