Relax there, Dr. I'm not implying you are

Thank you. I'm here all week.
Seriously, back to the weight gain topic.
Empty calories are calories that we eat
where we are getting no nutritional value
- or an over abundance in 'value' that
isn't necessary.
Lets take her initial cravings of milk and
cheese. While some milk (a glass)
is ok, drinking gallons of milk is not. It
does have nutritional value for her, but
at some point - perhaps the third glass -
it has become more bad than good.
She would have had to consume an
additional SEVENTY THOUSAND calories - on
top of her normal every day eating - to
gain 20 pounds. That is a lot of eating
and it is not healthy eating either. Like
I said, no one gains 20 pounds in less
than 3 months eating vegetables.
Gatorade has sodium in it. Sodium is salt,
just with a fancier name. Unless you are
dehydrated (think morning sickness) or
have been working out running a marathon -
no one needs this. Salt causes water
retention. Water retention is weight gain.
Drinking water prevents water retention by
keeping your body hydrated. An occassional
glass (8 oz) of Gatorade or even soda pop
is not going to be detrimental to anyone -
but in this case, it appears things aren't
occassional and seem to be more like the
norm. 70,000 calories is a lot of fruits
and veggies, is all I'm saying. And it
doesn't sound healthy at all.

about 0.25ounces(7grams),
in an AVERAGE pregnancy, weight gain is
distributed to the following:
baby 6-8lbs,
placenta 1-2 lbs,
an increased blood volume 3-4lbs,
encreased fluid volume 2-3lbs,
amniotic fluid 2lbs,
enlarged uterus 2lbs,
enlarged breast 1-2lbs
So as she goes along with her pregnancy,
she'll have all that weight to carry, and

what are you talking about? this weight

on doesn't really have anything to do with
this. i don't know where you get the idea
she'll "most likely burn off some of the

she'll just keep packing it on.
after you give birth you'll lose a good 20
pounds (because of the list above- baby,
placenta, fluids, etc). if you've gained
more than this suggested amount you'll
have to work it off. feel free to gain
whatever you want, it's not a rule that
you have to gain 20-25 pounds. just
remember that in the end you're going to
have to deal with that extra weight.

woah, no! I gained 20lbs in 11-12 weeks.

i think i had said that while she may be
eathing healthy foods, some have alot of
calories, therefore are not good for her
anymore.
I also said Gatorade is good if you have
morning sickness -bad morning sickness-
its good to keep you hydrated.
and your right it doesnt sound healthy.
so she should talk to her doctor instead
of get scared on here with what people's
replies are. hearing it from a doctor may
help her understand that yes she's eating
healthy, but has to do so in moderation
rather than all at once and maybe she
doesnt need the gatorade as much.

The average weight gain for the first
trimester is 3-4 lbs, like Laura said
above. Towards the end of pregnancy you
gain 1lb a week. You need to talk with
your doctor about your nutrition.

I know I'm working on it. I've already cut
back, and also I'm not sure its exactly 20
lbs, it might be 15lbs. I don't know for
sure, because i only knew the weight I was
at in January. But due to an injury i was
on crutches ad painkillers for a month,
and gained some weight. So I'm just
guessing I've gained a lot of weight so
far. I do think I need to drink more
water. But I do drink other things besides
gatorade, I also drink a lot of juice. And
I eat a lot of fruits and veggies, I ate 3
naval oranges yesterday, and that doesn't
count my intake of watermelon from this
last week. I just eat an excessive amount
of things. I really don't eat junk, but
everything has calories, and if you eat
enough of something even healthy food, you
can also gain weight, also my weight
changes depending on the day, some days
if my sodium intake is alot less, I'm a
lot lighter. Just depends on the day

Juice is nothing but calories and sugar.
Your body doesn't need it. Your body needs
water. You are eating fruit and taking
vitamins, there is nothing in juice you
need.
Edited to add: It is a really common
misconception that juice is good
for us. In fact, it is not good for
us - it just isn't as bad as, say, pop.

I try to drink more water. Its just hard,
I've never been big on drinking water. But
I drink more then I used to.
For the girls discussing average weight:
you also have to consider I'm 6'1" average
weight gain for you might not be the same
for me. i don't know much about weight
gain during pregnancy, but weight gain
when your not pregnant does consider
height. Like someone who is 5'3" could
pull off weighing 120 lbs and still lose
weight, if I weighed 130 I'd be
hospitalized. not trying to join the
disagreement or anything...

regardless of your height, the average
weight gain for pregnancy is 20-30 pounds
(or close to that).

A taller person has more room to hold the
baby in too. That is why they usually show
much later.

I know, I just have issues with my weight
normally, so I'm trying not to watch it
too closely because then it'll start to
bother me and I'll want to lose the
weight.

its important to do so when pregnant
though, its not just your body now, its
yours AND the baby's body that you need to
keep healthy.
I only gained just over 20lbs for the
entire pregnancy with my daughter. Height
doesn't really come into it.

Seriously? Only 20 lbs? Wow and I'm only
like an inch taller, what should I do to
regain a better weight? I heard its bad to
lose weight at this time. I don't try to
gain weight. It just keeps packing on.

first off you really really need to switch
to water...and honestly when you start
drinking it...your body is going to crave
it. I really didnt drink al ot of water
before i got preg. but now that is ALL i
want to drink. It feels a lot better than
drinking really sugary drinks b/c it
doesnt make you feel icky bloated. Im
almost 11 wks and i havent gained any
weight yet. I actually lost weight b/c i
was sick, the dr.s told me not to worry
though. Whats normal meals for you??
What things do you usually eat and how
much?? Your like me with the oranges!!!
They are soooo good!!!
