Secondary amenorrhea at age 31
Posted: 07-17-08 12:58pm

For the last 18 months my periods have been more and more irregular. I mean that every period has come later and later than the one before. It started with being 2 weeks late and now I am currently 4 months late with no signs of it coming any time soon. I have been to my Gyno. and had the fsh, lutenizing hormone level, tsh, t4, prolactin levels all drawn and all looks normal. Also have had 2 trans-pelvic ultrasounds, again, which were normal with no signs of PCOD or endometriosis. I am a bit worried that I am in pre/peri menopause. How is this possible at my age? ( Keep in mind that this started when I was 29). I am normally healthy and have given birth to 4 healthy babies. In 2000 I had my youngest child and the nest day had a tubal ligation. I know I am not pregnant, so I am just wondering if this is completely unheard of?? Anyone know?

Have you had a serum pregnancy test done? It is not common but women can become pregnant after a tubal ligation and it results in an ectopic pregnancy. It is rare but does happen and it may be worth having a serum pregnancy test done to rule it out as a possibility.

Tubal ligations can cause some very irregular periods. I am not sure what the reason is but I know it can occur. You may be in perimenopause. This would be considered premature but it does occur. Has your gyn indicated that this may be the cause of the irregular periods? Some women go into perimenopause early. Again, the cause may never be known. Talk to your doctor about this.

Supporter,
I have, in fact, had the serum PG test several times and its always been negative. I had the same concern myself, but my Gyno is sure that I am not pregnant. Right now my Dr is not sure of the problem because all of my test results are coming back normal. So I am at a loss, myself.
