Seeing tiny bright flashes
Posted: 03-20-08 19:10pm

Hi, I have a question ( or a complaint ): I always feel very light headed and cannot seem to focus, especially outside ( I feel better in dark or dim areas) and I sometimes see tiny bright flashes out of the corners of my eyes. I have a lot of sinus pain as well but no sinus infection. I'm not sure if the light headed feeling and tiny bright flashes are related to my sinus pain or if it's something different. I'm not really having headaches except for an occasional streak of pain starting from my nose or eyebrow shooting the middle or back of my head, then it's gone. I guess my biggest complaint though is that I feel so distant and out-of-focus when I go into bright lights. Does anyone know what this could be? Confused

Your aversion to light sounds like photophobia:

and the little flashing lights could be some sort of corneal abrasion (do you wear contacts?) which in itself can cause photophobia.

This is definitely one for an ophthalmologist - the sooner the better Smile

I do wear contacts and I have had three corneal abrasions because of them but this feeling is different. The corneal abrasions were very painful and even looking at the display light on my cellphone was excruciating! But this problem (seeing the flashes) does not involve pain and it actually only happens when I'm focusing on something like reading or watching tv. Even when I'm wearing my glasses it happens, the light headed feeling and the flashes. I have been to my ophthalmologist and he didn't find anything unusual so that is why I'm a bit concerned.

Then I would suggest going back to your GP with the symptoms and asking for further investigation.

One possibility is that it is coming from pressure on a disc in your neck - do you have neck problems? In that case, you would need an x-ray or MRI scan. It could be that you are adopting a certain position when watching tv or reading that is putting pressure on a disc.

Three corneal abrasions are quite a lot, by the way, and it is possible you have some scarring which would interfere with vision, in which case you would just have to live with it!

Best of luck, and if you find out what it is, can you post back here?

No, I don't feel like I have neck problems and I've never been injured. The only problem I have anywhere near my neck ( if you consider it to be 'near') is TMJ. I'm not sure that would cause vision problems. Anyway, yeah, I'll post back when I find out what it is.

Thanks Smile

Well my first thought isn't what has been suggested, so I'll give my little two sense. Sometimes hyperventilation, poor circulation, or whatever alters normal oxygen or blood flow in your head is going to cause you to see stars and flashes of light. I assume you have problems with breathing since this is in the allergies and asthma section. Otherwise you are going to want to put this post of your over in the vision and eye disorders section.

The increase of pressure and pain in your sinuses can also be causing your problems. Your sinuses go all around your eyes and swelling can put a pressure on your eyes will cause the illusion on brightness because of the strain on your optic nerves. I would suggest seeing someone to help clear the problem with your sinuses.

Also, you should have your contact prescription checked.
TMJ isn't going to cause problems with your vision as far as I know, but it can give you headaches and swelling...but unless you have a really severe case, isn't going to effect your sinuses or anything else that far away from your ears.
