Severe pain in left eye, head, and neck Posted: 07-15-08 21:58pm
My husband has been having severe pain in
the back of his left eye and deep in his
head that goes down his neck when he
coughs, sneezes, bends over, lays down to
quick for almost a year now. We are
military so he has seen the doctor on base
at least 4 times over this but they can't
think of what might be wrong. He did have
a MRI and they noticed a vessel that was
smaller than usual in his brain but said
nothing else about it and didn%u2019t
think it would cause the problem. This is
a daily problem for him. The pain has
brought him to his knees and I have seen
him cry over frustration and just from the
pain itself. I am very worried and
frustrated that no one can figure out what
is wrong. He has seen an ophthalmologist
because he is diabetic but they didn't
notice anything unusual. I personally
think he needs to go see a neurologist
ASAP! Something is not right here. This
shouldn't be going on for a year and only
getting worse. I was hoping you might have
some ideas that we could work with or look
up. Anything would be great. I am verry
worried!!!

Is the eye pain intermittent (episodes)?
Have he noticed some signs before getting
the eye pain, like bulging of the eye,
swelling of the eyelids, redness of the
eye, double vision?
Is he experiencing dropping, red, tearing
eye and runny nose, too?

None of those Posted: 07-18-08 21:10pm
No none of those. I really don't think it
has anything to do with his eye. The pain
starts behind the left eye but he doesn't
have eye bulging or redness or anything
else that would be considered not normal
except for the pain. He is fine until he
coughs or strains in any way. Even bending
over or laying down too quick will cause
the problem. As soon as he does any of
these he gets this severe stabbing pain
that goes from right behind his left
eyeball to his head and down his neck.
Then he gets a really bad headache. It's
not like a Migraine. He gets those too so
he knows the difference as do I because I
get those myself. This is really sharp and
seems to be happening more often. He has
been dealing with this way over a year now
but it seems to be getting worse and
happening more and more severe. It’s
heartbreaking to see a grown man hit the
floor in pain because he coughs or
sneezes. That is just not normal in
anyway!

Sorry for delayed post!
Headaches triggered by coughing and other
types of straining like sneezing,
laughing, blowing your nose, crying,
singing or bending over, and straining
when having a bowel movement are named as
cough headaches.
They can be primary without structural
cause, harmless, usually, improving on
their own, within two months to two
years.
What is important to be aware of are the
secondary cough headaches, caused by
structural problems within the brain (an
obstruction blocking the flow through the
normal fluid channels of the brain-the
ventricles; narrowing of the carotid
arteries should be excluded, too).
