Severe weight gain
Posted: 09-27-08 02:00am

Hi,

I am 32yrs, 160cm tall and usually weigh 60kg. I am currently gaining 1.5kg per week and now weight 72kg. I have been sticking to a balanced diet and calorie intake of approx. 1200 per day. I exercise 3-4 times a week and normally don't have a weight gain issue. I feel like I am bloated.

I have a high ANA count, microscopic haematuria, circular large skin rash that never goes away and suffer from anxiety, migraines and many other small problems. My doctor has suggested that I may have lupus but it takes a long time to diagnose (not under a specialist yet). I have been taking .25mg of Xanax per day which I am currently weaning off incase this is the reason for the weight gain. I am not taking any other medication.

Can you suggest any reasons for this constant and undeserved severe weight gain?

Thanks

Have you had your thyroid checked? While it doesn't necessarily explain your other symptoms, it might be something to look into.

A useful thyroid panel would include THS, FreeT3, FreeT4, as well as TPO and TG antibodies.

The FreeTs are important as they indicate the amount of thyroid hormone that is available for use in the body. TotalTs only indicate the total amount of thyroid hormones in the body, not what's available for use. These levels are best tested first thing in the morning (before 9am).

It might also be a good idea to get your adrenal hormone levels tested. This would include ACTH, cortisol, aldosterone, and renin. These are also best tested first thing in the morning.

Good luck and please keep us posted. Smile

Thyroid and hormone levels is what I thought immediately. If you are eating 200 calories more than you need per day you can gain a couple pounds in one month. It isn't your diet or your activity.
