Hello -- I'm new to the forum. I recently
had a very bad reaction to shrimp (I
think) with face, throat, neck, and
glandular swelling and itching. I
attribute it to shrimp because this is the
third time I've had a reaction to the
shrimp at a local japanese hibachi
restaurant -- this being the worst
reaction by far. The odd thing is that I
eat shrimp at home with no problem and
just got back from Hawaii where I had no
problem with the shrimp. I even was
tested for a shrimp allergy in the past
(after my less severe reactions) and the
result was negative. Has anyone heard of
a specific kind of shrimp that one is more
likely to be allergic to?
Thanks in advance for any help.

In most of the cases of shellfish allergy,
people with an allergy to one kind of
shellfish are allergic to other kinds of
shellfish as well.
Also, in most of the cases allergy to one
type of shrimp is related with allergy to
all types of shrimp.
But, there are exceptions from this.
There are people who are allergic to one
type of shrimp, but can eat other types of
shrimp without problems.
It will be best for you to avoid eating
shellfish at all.
The more you get in contact with the same
allergen (in your case, certain type of
shrimp), the more brutal the allergic
response will be.
Have you been tested for other types of
allergy?

shrimp allergy Posted: 06-25-08 13:57pm
Hi, MandMs --
I've been tested for everything and was
negative for everything except a mild
allergy to a dust mite found in
warehouses!
The only food I was tested for was shrimp.
I had no reaction whatsoever.
I suppose it is possible that it isn't
shrimp I'm allergic to, but perhaps a
spice that they use on the shrimp?

Allergic reactions to spices are rare and
usually mild, but severe reactions can
happen occasionally.
Ginger, coriander, garlic that are used in
some shrimp recipes are known as spices
causing food allergy.
It will be a good idea to ask for
information of used spices in the
restaurant in which you got all of your
attacks.
