Sinus blockage and headaches Posted: 06-16-08 08:52am
I'm 22 years of age and have suffered from
sinus problems for as long as I can
remember. I've always got tissues in my
pocket, am constantly blowing my nose, and
have mucus in the back of my throat which
I frequently have to dispose of. I always
seem to have at least one nostril blocked
at one time, and suffer with quite a lot
of headaches through this condition.
I've recently been to the specialist and
had a scan done which has shown no polyps,
but a slightly thickened nasal lining and
NO visual front sinus. The surgeon was
reluctant to operate due to obvious
possible complications and said he would
rather try other things first. These
include:
- A 1 month course of steroids, and with
7 days left they have done nothing bar
give me a bad stomach.
- A nasal spray which is to be used twice
a day, no sooner have i used it I need to
get rid of mucus, so I presume the spray
just goes straight into the tissue.
- Snorting salt water solution, and to
try steam treatment also.
None of this has made any effect what so
ever. I am due to go back late July for an
allergy test, and failing that showing any
major answers I will have to have this
operation. But I'm just a little bit
confused as to whether this op' will
actually be the solution to my problems.
He seemed very in confident the procedure
would do much as he can't remove that much
of the nasal lining due to it being close
to my eyes (something else I'm concerned
about). Or is he just saying that as he
wanted to fob we off with other methods
first in the hope they might actually
solve something?
Any feedback or possible insight to my
situation would be greatly appreciated!

Have you tried an allergy medication with
pseudoephedrine (e.g. Claritin-D,
Target-brand allergy medication with
pseudoephedrine, etc.)?

I used to take claritin when I was a child
for hayfever, but I no longer get that. I
have just googled 'pseudoephedrine', and
on first read it appears for someone with
allergy symptoms such as itching, watering
eyes etc? I don't have any of that, nor do
I actually know that if I do have an
allergy - what it's caused by!

My primary allergy symptom is the runny
nose/phlegmy back of the throat, too. I'd
wake up and have a morning cough even
though I don't smoke. But it went away
entirely when I started taking 24-hr
Claritin-D (the one with pseudoephedrine).
Target also has a cheaper generic brand
that works just as well. Just make sure
you get the one with pseudoephedrine...
the regular allergy pills don't seem to
work for the runny nose/sinus issues as
well.
I'm not crazy about being on allergy
medicine for the rest of my life, so I'm
going to see an allergy doctor (I'd take
shots over pills), but in the meantime,
it's been such a relief just to be able to
bend forward and not have my stupid nose
literally pour water onto the floor.

My symptoms differ. I don't have a runny
nose, mucus is always thick and needs to
be removed via hard nose blowing, or
sniffing from my nose into my mouth to get
rid of it. (Sorry I know it sounds
awful!). Neither do I have a cough, I
personally don't think it's allergy
related. But if all else fails, perhaps
tablets with pseudoephedrine may be worth
a try...

I can TOTALLY relate! I've been dealing
with these type headaches now for months.
Doc suggested I get a netipot, which I
have used. I've taken Sudaphed (the Real
stuff), Mucinex, every allergy med on the
block along with Ibupropen. It ALWAYS
comes back. I have mucus in the back of
my throat all the time. My head now just
has a steady throb on the left side behind
my eye all the way down to my neck. I'm
so TIRED of this!! I also have
fibromyalgia and thought maybe this could
be part of it, but the mucus makes me
believe it is sinus related. Went to the
doc in the box on a sunday to see what
they said and they couldn't find any
congestion in the ears, nose or throat.
But I feel mucus and blow out clear liquid
EVERY DAY! What else can we do for
relief. I've heard surgery might last for
only a little while. Is it really sinus?
I just don't know right now! Help,
please!
