Skin Discoloration

Hi everyone, i'm new to the forums. My 18 year old son has these white spots on his back, shoulders, chest, and thighs. His back his it the worst, with pretty much all of it covered in white. We went to his one dermatologist and he said that he had tinea versicolor. After using the treatment (selenium sulfide), nothing worked. So we went to another doctor, and she said that he has pigment loss, and not tinea versicolor. And that there is nothing that can be done about the discoloration. She based her pigment loss diagnosis on the basis that there was no scaly skin and that the dicoloration is in the form of a v (he is black, but with very light skin, lighter than most white people). He did, however, use nizoral shampoo (1% from the drugstore) for two weeks, about three weeks before he went to go see this new doctor. So I am thinking that this could have led to there being no scaly skin for the doctor to see.

I am just curious as to what to make of this. Two doctors, two differing opinions. I come to you for your opinions. What do you think is wrong with my son's skin?
