social anxiety disorder , paxil vs lexapro Posted: 06-10-04 16:10pm
Ok, I have self-diagnosed social anxiety
disorder. My doctor prescribed paxil for
me, but then he changed it to something
called lexapro. I looked up stuff on it
and it seems to cater to those with
depression and generalized anxiety
disorder...
I really need to know if lexapro will work
for social anxiety before I start to take
the medication. I fear my doc is a qwack
sometimes, so can someone please help me
out?
And btw, can someone help me out with
something else as well? I think I may
have generalized anxiety disorder too. I
have a few of the symptoms; i.E. Having
trouble falling asleep or staying asleep,
or not feeling rested after sleep, having
difficulty concentrating or remembering
(my mind goes blank), and becoming tired
very easily.
I've also come to realize that the whole
tired thing is also a symptom of diabetes.
And the blanking of mind is primarily
around social situations. So I am really
confused about this...
Thank you for your time.

I HAVE THE SAMMEEE PROBLEMS! Since I was
young I have always felt uncomfortable
around people. I was diagnosed with
social anxiety disorder about 1 year and
half ago by my psychiatrist when I could
not even go to the grocery store to get
MILK! I was on Paxil for about a year and
then about 5 months ago stopped taking it
because I didnt like to be medicated. It
had helped me but it also made me feel
weird and droopy. I want to fight my
anxiety and depression w/myself and God
not any medication.
Right now, I still have the after effects
and its been 5 months. Im always tired, I
feel like there is a glossy film over my
eyes, im disillusioned, im out of it, i
feel like im not even part of this world,
im not doing to well in college because i
cant concentrate, and everyday is a
struggle! But, Ive been excercising and
pushing myself to beleive that IT WILL GET
BETTER! Because I know it will, this has
to be the biggest thing ive ever conquered
in my life. I get really sad a lot of
times though because I feel isolated, and
out of it and I feel no one understands.
And it does suck, I will admit, I HATE
PAXIL, and I DISLIKE WHOMEVER DECIDED TO
DRUG US LIKE THIS, THIS HAS NOT "CURED"
PEOPLE, ITS SUCH A JOKE, THANKS GOVERMENT,
AGAIN !!!!! Doctors are soooo quick to
just prescribe something, well how about
something NATURAL, LIKE VITAMINS,
EXCERCISE, MEDIATION AND FINDING INNER
PEACE.....NNOOOO WE JUST WANT TO SUCK THE
LIFE OUT OF YOU!
Anyways a lot of the symptoms that
Raistilin has shared, Im having the same.
You are not alone, but it will get better,
I have faith!

Thank you for your
time.
This sounds rough, hon. First of all, the
symptoms of GAD could be related to social
anxiety, if that's what you do have. What
kind of a doctor are you seeing? He
doesn't sound very helpful. You're right,
lexapro is usually used to treat GAD. But
GAD and social anxiety are both very
related chemically, so it might help you.
Paxil is an antidepressant, but depression
and anxiety very often come hand in hand.
But it seems weird that he would just take
you off the paxil and put you on lexapro,
they are not interchangeable.
In my opinion, you need to see a
psychologist or psychiatrist and get this
figured out. Get a real diagnosis so you
have something to go off of. And if you're
worried about diabetes, that's a really
easy test.
Good luck!

I really hope that you win this battle.
It's a tough one! And you are tough for
trying to stick it out without help. I did
want to mention though, that if the paxil
made you feel awful (which is
understandable) there are always different
medications/dosages that you can try. Just
because it makes you feel awful in one
dose doesn't mean it won't work for you.
If you find that you need more help, you
can always give it another try.
You could also contact a psychologist who
deals with anxiety treatment. There are
ways to treat anxiety that are not
medicine related. Therapy is really life
saving for some people. Just like
medication is life saving for others. You
just need to find what works for you.
Good luck. Let me know if you need
anything.

Being anxious from time to time is said to
be a normal part of life.we already have a
wide variety of drugs for depression and
anxiety attacks and many makers of such
drugs claim that they are the best to
prescribe to patients.Lexapro and Zoloft
are two of the most popular and prescribed
drugs. Both drugs inhibit serotonin which
is believed to be a good regulator for
mood and anxiety disorder.
