Spotting after miscarriage Posted: 03-24-08 07:53am
I started having very irregular and
prolonged spotting in June of 06 after a
miscarriage. I have had a pap that was
clear, another physical exam that showed
my cervix
was very irritated. I was put on a strong
antibiotic in case there was an infection.
Blood work was drawn to test my thyroid
and my hormone levels (to see if there was
any thing left inside my uterus/cervix
after the miscarriage because i did not
have a d&c). I was also tested for
various STDs. All my bloodwork came back
normal. I had
an ultrasound done. The lining in my
uterus was off, but I do not remember if
it was too thick or thin. I tried taking
progesterone, but even after taking double
the amount (at my dr's
suggestion), there was no benefit.
Please explain the current medical
treatment(current medication and
dosage:none because no one seems to know
what to treat me for or diagnose me

Spotting after miscarriage could be due to
either organic or functional reasons.
Organic reasons for vaginal spotting can
include the presence of either an
infection, a tumor, endometrial
hyperplasia, placental remains after
delivery or miscarriage or could also
indicate injury. It seems that you
underwent the medical investigations to
confirm or exclude organic reason for the
spotting. Spotting can be also due to
some kind of hormonal imbalance, which is
called "functional bleeding". In cases of
funcational bleeding, progesterone is
usually used to treat the symptoms.
In cases like yours wherein preliminary
medical tests excluded an organic reason
for spotting and hormones didn’t help
treat the supposed functional bleeding,
the only diagnostic tool that remains is
endometrial curettage. Furthermore,
endometrial curettage is not only
diagnostic tool but also used as a
treatment tool. You can consult your
gynecologist about this to request more
information and to further seek answers
that point to a diagnosis.
