stop hormonal birth control?

About a year ago I started going on The Pill when my boyfriend and I started having sex, and for some reason I had a 2 week period (which has never happened to me before). I'm guessing that the "stress" of being sexually active again knocked my period out of whack, or something. Anyway, I went to a gyn and he prescribed me Yaz, to "cycle" me. I took that for about 6 months and found that I didn't like it - it gave me cold sores around my mouth and made my libido go to 0. I do like what it did for my skin, though, and made my cramps less severe.

I asked him to prescribe me something else to try - and he put me on Sprintec (A generic form of Ortho Cyclen, I believe). With Sprintec I haven't noticed any mouth sores but the non-existant libido is still there (I'm not attracted to my boyfriend at all anymore). We haven't had sex in months because of it. I've also been feeling depressed and disconnected. I went to another doctor and she suggested I try NuvaRing, since she said it had a lower dose of hormones since it didn't have to be absorbed systemically. I googled it and found a lot of people saying bad things about it (causing more blood clots that others, vaginal dryness/itchiness) and am unsure if I should try it. I am easily prone to soreness during/after sex and sometimes it can even be painful, so I'm concerned that NuvaRing would exacerbate these problems. I think I read that a couple people got infections from NuvaRing, too.

The main reason I'm taking BC is of course preventing pregnancy, but I also like having lighter periods with less pain as well as the clear skin. I like the idea of going off of BC altogether, but I don't want to go back to the pimples and pain (waking me up in the middle of the night, having to take loads of advil). I would be happy to go back to condoms to prevent pregnancy if I could find other ways of shortening my period, making it less painful, and clearing up my skin, but so far I haven't been able to find any.

Does anyone have any advice? It would really be appreciated. I'm feeling really frustrated right now.

I had a situation similiar to yours. I was taking Yasmin for about 1.5-2 years. Cleared up my skin, cramps were more managable, and I was prevented from pregnancy (all of these are "yay" things). BUT- I became depressed, my sex drive was completed killed (BC + stress = no sex for a LONG long time), and I didn't feel like myself.

I went off. I lived with the cramps (and "living" it up lightly...I woke up too, was in massive amount of pain, took what I called my 'menstral cocktail' which consisted of 3 pills Pamprin and 2 pills Advil, and doing the same thing every 3 hours), suffered through some acne stuff (learned my way around concealer though), but I had my self back. My sex drive went up a little...but when I wasn't stressed, it was back!

I'm on Lutera (gen. of Alesse). I'm not depressed, my cramps are slightly better, the acne thing is okay, but it's been a positive experience.

What I'm trying to say is...maybe take a break for awhile? Flush yourself of the hormones for awhile...and take another stab at it later. I personally don't care for the Nuvaring. I haven't tried it, but I'm not up for the things to look out for (I don't want this falling out during sex!)

My post was mostly a little "life story" piece, but I hope it helped.

So it sounds like all you're really tried is yaz and ortho- neither of those are low dose, are they? It might be worthwhile to try a low dose pill like loestrin (I loved it) or something different?

Also, to my knowledge the nuvaring isn't any more of a blood clot risk, and yeah it could fall out during sex but you just put it back in when you're done lol... I liked it just fine. But I did have some vaginal irritation after using it for about a year.
