sudden Yasmin side effects ? Posted: 06-13-08 07:47am
Hello! I'm 27 and I've been taking Yasmin
for probably 7 years and never had a
single problem. My weight stayed the same,
my periods got VERY regular, to the DAY,
and things were ok.
Starting about 3 months ago I was on my
honeymoon and decided to skip my period
that month which I do a few times a year
and Yasmin never let me down! Anyways my
period came anyways and not only that, but
I spotted an extra week after! It was most
noticable in the mornings after having
sex. It was just brown and yucky. Then I
didn't have a period the next month, only
24 hours of brown and this month I had a
regular one. On top of that I've suddenly
gained 5 pounds without changing ANYTHING.
I wonder, can Yasmin suddenly screw me up
so many years after I started taking it? I
hear horror stories about Yasmin but I
only see it from women taking it for a few
months or maybe a year? It was always so
good to me. What's going on? The weight
gain terrifies me too because I so easily
gain weight and I've been trying so hard
to eat well and I feel like it's been
pointless. It ticks me off more because I
have to pay $50 a month for Yasmin even
AFTER insurance pays 15, and now I think
it's messing my body up too.
I have a OBGYN appointment in a few weeks
and I'm going to talk to her about it and
see about getting on a new pill anyways
for price reasons, but do you think all
these weird sudden symptoms are from
Yasmin? Can you reccommend a pill? I can't
afford to gain anymore weight. I just
can't...
I believe that your first symptom
(irregular periods) was due to skipping
the period. Body needed some time to
establish normal cycles/periods.
The second symptom (weight gain) could be
due to the birth control pills but you
should be aware that pills only indirectly
can increase the weight by increasing the
appetite. Excessive food is the real and
direct cause for increasing body weight.
Five pounds is not so much so that you can
notice great changes i9n your appetite.
All types of birth control pills have the
same side effects.

Well I'm confused because I've skipped a
period with Yasmin at least 2-3 times a
year for the past 7 years and it never
gave me a problem. It stopped my period in
its tracks and the next month my period
would always come regular and right on
time.. Also when I tried to skip my period
that one time a few months ago, Yasmin
actually did NOT stop it, it continued for
two weeks. that's what worried me. It
didn't stop my period like it was suppose
to and it extended my period twice over..
As for the weight gain, my appetite hasn't
gotten bigger. I've actually been on a
minor diet in that I've been counting my
calories and have been taking fewer so I
don't see how my appetite could have
gotten worse. It's 5 pounds recently but
it's more like 10 over the past 4 months.
Well, either way I'll be switching in a
few weeks to something more affordable and
cross my fingers that I do not gain any
more weight.
There is no guarantee that you can always
manage to skip the period by throwing out
the placebo pills and starting a new pack
right after finishing the active pills
from the previous pack. From the other
hand, if you use to practice this "period
skipping" very often the risk for
irregular bleeding is higher.
You can wait to see what would the next
periods look like. If the next periods are
also prolonged (menorrhagia) you can
consult some gynecologist to check if
there is some organic reason for this
(infection, tumor, endometriosis etc.).
