Q: Taking advil when pregnant?

when i was pregnant i took a bunch of advil to try and get rid of a migrane i had. at the time i didn't know i was pregnant but i was about 5 wks along when this happened. i've done some looking up on this and found nothing except "don't take advil when pregnant" and "if you did i'm sure the baby will be fine". well.... my son was born with a heart defect... me and my husband have no history of heart disease in our families what so ever. heart defects happen in about 1% of births. what i want to know is... why arent' you supposed to take advil when pregnant?!?! is there a chance that this heart defect was caused by me taking the advil? everyone and everything says to not take advil when pregnant but no one ever gives a reason... so what could happen to the baby if you do??? and with my son having a heart defect that he has to deal with for the rest of his life i think its IMPORTANT to know if theres a chance that advil could have caused this, so others out there can educate themselves during or before there pregnancy! but maybe thats just me...

its possible.. I wish I remembered where I saw the advil article but they said if you take it at the time of conception or suring the first 3 months it can cause abnormalities.
Also your sons heart defect is it an open heart? There is a part of the heart that can be open and did not close when they were born In time though it should close and if not they can do surgery on it. Best of luck!

i just found out im 6 weeks pregnant. about 3 weeks ago i got a tooth pulled out and a dental xray, i didnt even know i was pregnant. so over a 2 week period i took 20 advil, 10 panadol and 8-10 codiene tablets for my pain, now im worried that the fetus will end up with an abnormalitie, it scares me, and if there is a chance how will they pick it up in the first 12 weeks if i need to terminate??

There isn't much of a chance that they will pick anything up in 12 weeks. I didn't know he had this heart defect till almost 24hrs after he was born, and i had the 3d ultrasound getting done every 2-3 weeks towards the end. In the ultra sound his heart looked fine and sounded fine thanks to the PDA (which allows the mother to pump blood for the baby). I really can't give you any advice on wether or not to keep the baby tho. good chances are that if your baby is born with a defect the doctors will be able to help your child.

i went to the doctors yesterday and she said there is a risk, but she also said the amount i took was low doses, 20x200mg- i dont see that as a small doses. how many did you take mommykins, and did your son end up with any abnormalities(facial or physical). technically i would be 6 weeks from the start of the last period, but from ovulation i would only be going into the 4th week, so technically i took those pills 1-2 weeks after ovulation, when the cells were breaking up to form the baby. i want to know if that puts me at risk of having a child that is deformed.i cant even get any straight answers from the doctors.also it says taking advil during the first trimester will increase your chance of miscarriage by 80%. at the time of conception im asuming i took the pills to implantation, but nothing looks like i will miscarry.

also i forgot to ask you if when you found out you were pregnant and you advised the doctors of what you took, did they tell you then of the risks associated???. also im wondering what mg advil you took- i took 20x200mg.

it sounds like your in the same boat with the doctors unclear babble. I told my doctor about the advil and all they told me was " its ok,i'm sure the baby will be fine, just don't take anymore". As far as the deformaties, my son ended up with just the heart defect. (so yes an abnormality since the chances of me haveing a child with a heart defect was about 1%) but he has no physical or mental deformaties though, other than his heart condition, infact he is very smart (one of the top in his class)and as cute as a button and loved by every teacher in his school even though he's only in the first grade haha. it has a been a rough road at times with his heart condition but i think it has just made me apprciate him that much more, and there are far more good times than bad. as far as how many i took, i took about the same as you. the advil i was taking were 200mg each and i took somewhere around 16 of them that day.
