Temporal Pain and Problems Talking Posted: 04-09-08 22:14pm
I have been having terrible temporal pain
on both sides. I have been using
Ibuprofen and moist heat. They both work
but they do not last long. In a few hours
it all starts again. I feel like my head
is in a vice most of the time. I was
given Percocet for my pain but afraid to
use it.
Using the mouth guard has made my symptoms
worse since using it last week, it was
adjusted the other day but has not helped.
I stopped using it during the day but
still have the same problem.
My ear pain is not as bad but does come
and go.
I am also experiencing pain when I talk.
If I start to talk I feel pain in the jaw
area and I have to stop. I have also
found that people are having a hard time
understanding me when I do talk.
One other question my 2 teeth that I had
knocked loose are sensitive but the
dentist says there is nothing wrong with
them, can this be caused by TMJ.

the sore teeth are probably just referred
pain from the tmj. It may take a while for
the guard to take effect. sometimes these
things have to be fine tuned several times
before they are right.
as for talking i talk with out moving my
jaw at all. it takes practice. how long
have you had this mouth guard? And what
kind of doctor are you seeing--is he just
a general dentist?
Take the percocet--it wont hurt and will
probably do you good. if you dont want to
take it regularly just take it when you
absolutely have to.

I am seeing an oral surgeon who
specializes in TMJ.
Had the guard for a week, but finding it
is still causing more pain, so I guess it
needs some more adjustment.
I have used the percocet twice and it
knocked me out both times, so a little
hesitant to use it.
My general dentist took x-rays of the
teeth that I knocked loose to make sure no
breaks were missed the first time and that
the root was not dying. Nothing showed up
and he told me they were fine, but no
explanation as to why they are bothering
me.

like i said probably referred pain. give
ther guard way more than a week ---i think
that you will get used to it. ask for a
pain killer that isnt as strong as the
percocet---does aleve or ibuprophen work?

Yeah it works but not very long, after
about two hours I start feeling the
pressure again.

ok what you can do---and make sure that
you drink lots of water with this and that
you take it with food-----alternate
ibuprophen with asprin---that way you can
take someting every 2 hours.
