Testing for HIV after risky behavior
Posted: 04-10-08 00:20am

I have one risk behavior by unprotect with a prostitute on Dec 12 last year, and next within 2-7 weeks show too many symptoms such as dry cough, low fever, night sweat, lose weight, muscle pain, lymph become bigger a little . And I have test HIV antibody for 7 times by 28days, 42days, 56days, 7odays, 91days, 93days and 96days in hosiptal or CDC,all of them are negative . because in china , lots of doctor thinks that 3 month is enought to test . but a few of doctor thinks need 6 month, so now I am very afraid and helpless. I don't know if the 3 month is enough or not and don't know if will be change as result after 6 month. pls give me some suggestion. Thank you in advance.

Hi there,

When did you start experiencing all these symptoms? Also, if memory serves, there should be a test that is fairly accurate even when your body has not built up enough HIV antibodies for conventional testing methods.

If you become infected with HIV, it usually takes between three weeks and two months for your immune system to produce antibodies to HIV. About 5% of people take longer than two months to produce antibodies (antibody test results for HIV are accurate more than 99.5% of the time).
Testing at 3 and 6 months after possible exposure will detect almost all HIV infections.

What types of HIV tests you were performed?

I understand you worry, but, please, calm yourself. A six-month window is extremely rare with modern antibody testing and combination of ELISA and Western blot is highly accurate.

hi,
dont worry too much. the chances of you testing positive after so many negative tests is very small. you do need to get checked again after 6 months just to make sure. what part of china are you in?? i went to shanghai lasst october where i had possible exposure. i had lots of symptoms, and i was very worried. i have since had 2 negative tests. the last at 5 months. i know EXACTLY how you feel.
i dont think your HIV. its prob all in your head. paranoia can be devastating to your physical health.
get checked at 6 months to put your mind at rest.
all the best

The doctor catches 98% of the people who are positive that took a test after three months. There is a 2% who take up to six months for HIV to show up. Going for the second test rules out that you are not among the 2% called slow progressors.

All the best to you

Smart...I believe Mson is right, just calm down and do something to kill time. Play games, go out more, read a book, or just sleep in more to rest your body. Sleep might be a cause of some symptoms, lack of sleep may cause lack of energy which causes many symptoms. Best of luck to you, and try google to find more symptoms. If it's negative post it here, I want to learn!
