throat stings when swallowing Posted: 03-01-08 16:37pm
Hi everyone.
About 2 months ago i developed a slight
cough and it has gotten worse recently.
Initially i thought it would go away so i
took night nurse medicine which usually
clears up most things. Then about a month
ago i started coughing much more, perhaps
due to the fact i was going to the gym
alot and maybe it weakened my immunity and
allowed the cough to worsen.
I went to the doctor and he listened to my
chest and said it was only a throat
infection so he gave me simple linctus
cough medicine for a week. During that
week however I started coughing so much my
throat was sore and some of the sputum
contained a little blood. This only
happened in the morning when i woke up
after sleeping. I went to the doctor as
soon as it happened and he prescribed
amoxicillin 250mg 3 times a day for a week
as well as more linctus.
This combination did help, and i remember
i felt 80% better with the cough gone
completely, but when the course stopped I
was left with a swollen lump in the back
of my throat which made it really painful
to swallow. I couldnt make it through the
day without Ibuprofen. I thought this
would go away but after another week of
constant throat pain I went back to the
doctor and he said the back of my throat
was inflamed and prescriped
Phenoxymethylpenicillin 250mg to be taken
twice, four times a day and told me its
best to stay off Ibuprofen and gave me
something called Diclofenac Sodium Enteric
coated tablets 50mg to be taken 3 times a
day after meals. He also booked me in for
a blood test which will be in 2 days.
Today is the first day im taking the
penicillin and diclofenac tablets and Im
really worried as ive hardly ever been ill
before and ive never had constant pain
like i have in the back of my throat which
isnt going away. The dicoflenac tablets
dont seem to be helping as ive taken 2 so
far today and im still in so much pain,
unlike when i take Ibuprofen and the pain
is usually subsiding within the hour.
Apart from the throat problems im fine,
not a single problem elsewhere but i can
barely talk or swallow right now. I was
just wondering is this a normal symptom of
things generally as they begin to get
better? Do you have any advice what i
should be asking the doctors.
Thanks for your time. I really appreciate
it.

Just a quick update, thought id give
gargling with listerine a try, i have to
say it took away about 40% of the pain
immediately! Im in love with listerine! I
can actually swallow without cringing, i
hope it lasts...
