timing of Gardasil vaccine Posted: 06-24-08 16:23pm
I'm aware that you're supposed to get
three Gardasil vaccinations over the
course of six months. I got my first one
in April of 2007, and forgot about it
until almost a year later. I asked a
doctor about starting it over and was told
it didn't matter that I had let a year
pass, I could continue with my second and
third vaccinations. So now I've had 2
over the course of a year and 3 months.
I've made an appointment to get my third,
but will it still be effective even though
I've gotten the vaccinations so far apart?
I'm not sure I trust that doctor, I got
the feeling she didn't know what she was
talking about...

If you get the feeling, that they were
confident in their answer, then sometimes
getting a second opinion is more than
worth it, especially when it comes to your
health.

I would be suspicious of your doctor's
answer. Here is what the gardisil website
says:
"What if I'm late getting my second or
third dose of GARDASIL?
Ideally, your vaccination schedule should
be:
1. First dose: at a date you and your
doctor or healthcare professional choose.
2. Second dose: 2 months after the
first dose.
3. Third dose: 6 months after the first
dose.
If you're a few days late getting your
second or third dose of GARDASIL, don't
panic. If you miss a dose, your doctor or
healthcare professional will decide when
to give the missed dose.
One way to make sure you're on time for
your second and third doses is to make
your follow-up appointments before you
even leave your doctor's office. If you
think e-mail, mail, or text message
reminders will help you get your next 2
doses on time, we can help.
For more information on GARDASIL, talk to
your doctor or healthcare professional."
I would get a second opinion.

So actually the CDC does not recommend
restarting this series (like the Hep B
vaccine series). The only reason it is
recommended for patients to receive all
three injections within one year is
because their study only measured the
efficacy of the series after a year. You
are more likely to be covered if you
receive the series within a year from the
first dose, but it is not recommended to
restart. Trust your healthcare
professional.
