TMJ treatments & doctor visit
Posted: 04-26-08 21:37pm

I have had problems since I was a child with clicking/popping in my jaw. I didn't know what TMJ was until I visited my dentist this past week after severe face pain and having trouble sleeping/swollen neck. My regular doctor couldn't find anything that would cause such problems so I visited my dentist. He was unable to take x-rays/mri during my visit but said he was sure that it was TMJ. I am going to see a specialist on the 12th of May however my pain is only getting worse. This pain in my face is below my eyes and around my jaw. I have has swelling in my neck on and off for a few weeks. It feels as if the muscles in my jaw are so tight that they cannot relax when I try to sleep. As I said, I am unfamiliar with TMJ so I am not sure if this is normal or if there is anything that I can do from home until my appointment to stop some of the pain. The trouble sleeping is causing problems in my daily routine. If anyone has had treatments I would love to know what to expect at the visit and how to stop some of the pain. Thank you

also use ice----ice is way better than heat. yes heat is more comfortable but ice works better

use ibuprophen or aleve and keep to a soft diet.

before you go in to your visit with your doctor take ibuphrophen aobut an hour before----if you need a break dont hesitate to say so. The doctor will more than likely take molds and x rays. and ask you to open and close. write down any questions that you may have for him so that you dont forget.

for you to help him better treat you---start a diary of pain on a scale of 1-10 write down how many milimeters you can open, and move side to side and also how many times it pops on each side. it really does help him out.
