Are There Ways of Dealing W/depression Other Than Pills? Posted: 07-11-07 21:55pm
I am 15. When I was 10, I was diagnosed
with depression. I was sent to the school
counsellor, then a psychiatrist, who
prescribed anti-depressants for me. I took
those for about a year and a half. Then, I
realized that the pills were (and I don't
mean to be cliche, but this is true)
making me feel numb. Sure, I wasn't as sad
as I used to be, but I wasn't as happy,
either.
So, I stopped taking my pills in grade
seven.
That worked well for a while, but for the
past year, my depression seems to have
gotten worse; the periods of sadness and
depair are stronger, and they go on for
longer periods of time.
But I don't want to go back on the pills,
and I definitely do not want to go back to
see the psychiatrist again...
Any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.

Hey Sweetie, what you are describing is
depression. You have a chemical imbalance
your brain (you have no control over) and
it sends mixed signals and makes you sad,
unhappy, nothings fun anymore.....you
definately need to go back to your Dr.
Sometimes it takes different meds until
you find the right one that will "balance"
you. It took me 7 different meds and 8
years.....hopefully you can find one a lot
faster. Do you remember what you were
taking? I know 37.5 effexor has worked
wonders for me. I can still function and I
don't have the highs and lows as before
and not crying all the damned time. It
kinda makes everything level.....make
sense? PM me if you'd like!

I think it will take a little time to work
up the nerve to tell my parents that I'm
not actually better, but you're probably
right--it's the best thing to do.
thanks for the advice! it meant a lot to
me.

Have you tried cbt? It has changed my life
dramatically more than I ever thought
anything could. I highly recommend cbt for
panic, anxiety and depression. If you
don't want to see a therapist pick up a
copy of been there, done that? Do this! By
sam obitz and start doing the tea form
exercise in it. We used this book in my
cbt group. Take care and know you can get
better if you learn to think more
objectively about your symptoms through
the cbt exercises. The more you work on
the exercises the more relief you get.
Good luck!

OMG!
Drugs are NOT the answer!
I cant believe these people are telling
you to take drugs and then acting like
they care about you.
There is no simple answer...everyone has
to find one that works for them.
Try to find joy in life naturally before
you go back to a doctor that doesn't
actually want you to get well.

Can you clarify what you mean by
'naturally' please? It sounds
suspiciously like 'pull yourself together
and count your blessings' to me and as
anyone with true depression will tell you,
that just isn't possible. That's like
telling an asthmatic not to use their
inhalers but try to 'breathe through' an
attack. Nonsense.
Sometimes medicine is needed to get you
right - there's no shame in it and it
doesn't have to be forever.
To the op - I totally understand how
you're feeling, please tell your parents,
it will help you I promise and you WILL
get better, it just takes us time to get
there

As i am sure many of you know all a
medicine is a naturally occurring chemical
that has been taken, enhanced and sold for
way to more than it would ever take to
make it.
Find out what is in the midicine that
works for you, and where you can get the
same thing that corrects the imbalance. i
have been dealing with the same deal you
are for almost 9 years, and have never
taken any meds, i have found ways to take
care of myself.
Anyone that tells you the medicine will
cure you most likely didnt have chronic
deppression, as that is for the most part
uncurable, the chemical imbalance in that
case doesnt have any cause, and will have
been noticed at a certain age.
Also remember the most important thing
about the meds, they may make it worse, if
you dont feel better you should tell your
parents, and quite possibly stop taking
them, i have had more friends commit
suicide then i would like to remember and
of those more than half were on pills. so
whatever way you decide just be careful,
and dont do anything stupid

Well I am depressed a lot but lately I
have not been. Try to find some new
friends and enjoy there company. This is
proven by me that a good close best friend
will always make you feel much better.

Please don't go all Tom Cruise on
other people who need meds to handle
mental illness, you say yourself that
"everyone has to find what works for
them". Some of us DO have a chemical
imbalance, and our doctors know how to
treat it. Making a sweeping statement
about drugs like that is ridiculous.
