Q: Tattoos And Pregnancy?

Ok i was reading on a forum type thing for pregnany, and seen that getting tattoos is not recommended while pregnant. Now i did get a tattoo, but i didn't know i was pregnant at the time. I think it might have been when i was around 2-4 weeks pregnant.. maybe more. I don't remember when i got it for sure. Anyone know if this could have harmed my baby, or if i should let my doctor know? I guess i never thought about it before as being bad. I was told by my artist that it was one of the baby myths. Just a concern. Thanks for your time..

i've read quite a few pregnancy books and that has never come up. i don't see how it would affect the baby since it is only in the top layers of your skin and should be non-toxic because it is being put into your skin. if it doesn't cause you any irritation (or only minor irritation from the needle) then i don't see how it could be harmful to the baby. i would be more worried about it stretching out, depending on where it is. you would think someplace like your ankle or leg or something would be safe from that but if you could see my legs and ankles right now!! lol. hopefull you won't swell up like i am though. you just really have to make sure that the artist is safe and the equipment is sterile because you can contract hep b or c from tattoo needles and that's not good for you or for baby.

Well i was tested for those at my first visit, and nothing came back positive. I would have never did it if i would have known i was pregnant. I got it done on my lower back. I didn't get any infection from it, and it healed nice, and fast. I know the guy personally that did the tat for me, and i seen fresh needles, and ink. So i know i was safe there. Just hope i didn't hurt the baby Sad

i think it's very unlikely that you did any harm at all. i looked online to see if i could find any info on it (i'm always curious about this stuff) and the only article i could find that seemed trustworthy and helpful was this one:

http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/1963 18/OP_ED_Tattoos_During_Pregnancy_Yes_or_N o_

at this point if your tattoo is healing or healed and there is no infection and your blood tests are okay then the chance of it harming the baby is very slim. the only other thing to question is the chemicals in the ink, but i would think that they use so little ink compared to your body size, unless you got a whole sleeve done or something lol) that you would metabolize it safely and it wouldn't cross over or if it did it would have little effect on the baby. i think people just want to be safe rather than sorry so they avoid things like that during pregnancy. but you didn't know so there's no going back and you should just not worry about it.
