Yeast infections - is Premarin safe for dry & irritated vagi Posted: 07-17-07 17:20pm
I recently went to the doctor for a yeast
infection. I was taking a low dose birth
control pill and discontinued it because I
tend to get yeast infections on birth
control. The doctor confirmed the presence
of yeast and prescribed difulcan for 10
days. She also prescribed 1 gram daily of
Premarin for dry vagina. I can't find any
info. about prescribing this for a young
female. I'm a little concerned that this
isn't a good treatment to take for 6
weeks. I can't find information that
doesn't relate to menopause. Is this
medicine safe for a yeast infection and
irritated vagina? Should I get a second
opinion?
Difulcan is an oral antifungal drug that
can be used for treating chronic vaginal
yeast infections. Premarin is an estrogen
drug used for treating vaginal dryness due
to lack of estrogen during menopause. I am
not sure why are you experiencing vaginal
dryness. In your case, menopause is out
of the question due to your age (late
20's). Acute yeast infections are usually
treated with a local antimycotic. Chronic
(reoccurring) vaginal infections are
treated with local and systemic (oral)
antimycotics. In case of chronic yeast
infections, a microbiological examination
should be completed to test yeast
sensitivity to various antimycotics.
