Doctor Wont Give Sonogram Posted: 07-18-07 16:22pm
I got my first sonogram in March when I
was a month into pregnancy. I am now 22
weeks and at my recent doctor visit he
told me to be "patient" on getting another
sonogram. I'm becoming unpatient and I
don't know why he'd refuse to give me
another one. Any ideas?

I have no idea why he wouldn't. I know I
can't have anymore done unless I am
willing to pay for them. My insurance only
covered so many....but I don't see why he
would just outright refuse to give you
one.

Does your insurance cover it?
Is there some reason (other than knowing
the sex) that you'd need an ultrasound?
Do you have a high risk pregnancy?
Are you willing to pay for it yourself?

If you only had one you should be covered
for the second one. I think after two they
don't paying after that. When is your next
visit? I would switch doctors lol.

Believe it or not, some women don't get
any ultrasounds and somehow they
survive.
I'm teasing. I know it is hard. But
really, the pregnancy is such a short
amount of time compared to the entire life
of the child.
If an ultrasound is that important
to you, there are companies that do it...
you just have to pay for it.
Also? If you are on medicaid, you will not
get one unless it is necessary. If there
no reason for one... a lot of doctors
won't subject the baby to it.

I was on medicade with my daughter, and i
was given 3. All paid for. I'm on
medicade, and my work insurance, and i go
in on the 30th for my second. I thought it
was important to get one around 20-24
weeks to see if the baby is measuring on
time, or to see if the baby is healthy,
and growing right.

Then your doctor must have agreed with
you. Generally you don't get to make the
full decision on when to have an
ultrasound and for what purpose.

If you want...just pay for a 3D/4D u/s.
If there is no medical reason for the u/s,
then he wont jump to it.
If he wont tell you why, I would switch.

Ultrasounds ans sonagrams are expensive,
and so is the machinery. Your doctor may
not have the ultrasound machine handy when
you come in for your monthly checkup. You
may have to schedule an appointment just
for the ultrasound. You should definatly
talk to your doctor about why he wasn't
able to give your your 20 week ultrasound,
which is usually standard percedure. He
might simply not believe in giving
ultrasounds if there does not seem to be
anything wrong.
I know that I was impatient to get my 20
week ultrasound. I came in at 19 weeks
hoping to get one and he only listened to
the heartbeat, which was cool nonetheless,
but I was in the office for about three
minutes and then sent off.

My doctor scheduled my u/s for when im
going to be about 22 weeks. Sometimes
especially if you go to a larger hospital
that deals with more patients you will
have to wait a good 2 months before they
can get you an appointment. At least
thats how mine is. I had an U/S at around
13 weeks because I didnt know the date of
my last period and they needed to do some
genetic screening. I went for my first
prenatal visit at around 15 weeks and she
had me schedule an u/s about 7 weeks in
advance. So you should check with your
doctor to see if maybe it takes awhile to
get an appointment, and if it does then
maybe you can make one for within the next
month.

I'm on ritecare from the state and i had
one at 7w 5d, by a nurse then my doctor
did another one 2 days later for his
record, then i had another one for my NT
scan at the hospital by a specialist
where the she was even nice enough to do a
4D for us and told us she wont tell if we
wont (she gave us 3 sets, me , my mom, and
chris(the dad) of 5 pictures each), i
guess it all just has to do with the doc.
and place you go, i also go for another
one the first week of july when i'm 20
weeks for a structual ultrasound where we
find out what were having. It sounds to me
like you need to talk to your doc. and
insurance company or switch doctors.
