Beyond Restless Leg Symdrome

I don't know if this is the right place to post but thought I would start here. I am desperate to hear from someone who has experienced this or who has knowledge of these symptoms and can send me in the right direction towards finding help for some relief.
About 2 years ago I started suffering from what I thought was RLS. It has slowly progressed from a little restlessness in my calves to restlessness, pain, twitching, lightening like cramps from my feet all the way to my arms. This is affecting my whole life as I am getting no more that 3 hours of sleep a night. I have tried medications for RLS and either they don't help my symptoms and make my whole body feel like it's on fire or they make me extremly ill and I spend the next 4 or 5 hours vomiting. I have tried muscle relaxers, valium, xanax and they all make everything much worse. The only time I can get any kind of relief is to load up on pain relievers like darvocet to at least lessen the pain (nothing takes it away completely) and I don't want to rely on narcotics for the rest of my life let alone run the risk of developing a dependency on them. This has also started affecting me during the day as well as every single night. I went for a sleep study last night and fell asleep after about 30 minutes of tossing and turning. I slept for about 1 1/2 hours and then was jolted awake by the pain. I ended up having to leave because the pain was so unbearable. I ended up crying my eyes out all the way home and had to sit in a scalding hot bath for about an hour and I also took the pain meds so I could finally fall asleep around 4am. I have an awesome job that I love but am on the verge of losing it because I can perform my duties properly because my brain is fried form all this pain and no sleep. My doctor is trying to find out what is wrong but at this point in time I don't feel like he is being aggressive enough about helping me. If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it. Please help as I am desperate for some relief. Thanks so much in advance for any suggestions anyone may have.

I have experienced RLS about the same way. Have you tried Mirapex? It's new, I started taking it just this week and it's helped already. Good luck!

Hi.
Thanks for the reply..
I have been seeing the my family doctor as well as a rheumatologist for the past month. So far after all the ct scans and blood tests the one thing that has been comfirmed is that I have a major vitamin D deficiency. My rheumatologist said that that could very well be causing all this pain. He has started me on taking 50,000 units of vitamin D once a week. I have only taken one so no results as of yet. I am currently taking darvocet and soma to get some relief at night and sleep. I was taking the Soma compound with Codeine but it has started to do damage to my stomach so I was switched to just plain Soma (its a muscle relaxer) And he also has switched me from the darvocet to ultram extended release because I am once again being jolted awake by the pain. My doctor has reservations about treating me for RLS at this point because I have reacted so badly to the RLS meds in the past. My rheumatoligst doesn't believe that it is RLS. I have gotten lucky (finally) and found a specialist that actually takes time to talk to me and spends at least 20 to 30 minutes with me at each appointment.
Anyway, I'm just rambling now, but thanks again for the reply, I am so happy for you that you have found relief and I hope you continue to have luck with your treatment.....happy dreams!! Smile Stacy
