Starting Birth Control
Posted: 07-19-07 01:36am

Hey I dont know if this question has been answered I certainly couldn't find anything...ok well I didn't look THAT hard. but please help!
I 'm absolutely certain I am not pregnant. I am a virgin but I am about to become sexually active. I want to start taking birth control, and my doctor said to wait for the sunday after i begin my period ( I am irregular) so I have not gotten my period, is it ok to start the birth control anyway? (without period) Would I need to go through a whole pack before I am protected?
Thanks for everyones help!

Starting the pill on the first Sunday after you start your period is not vitally important. It is a general, rule of thumb way of starting when you are reasonably assured that you are not pregnant before starting the pill.

You may start whatever day is convenient for you, as long as you are certain you are not pregnant. A Sunday start works well for me because it means I am usually not bleeding on a weekend (when I actually have time for sex!).

You will be fully protected after 7 full days of taking the pill consistently. Use a backup method (condom) if you have sex during the first 7 days of taking the pill. After that you're fine - every day of every month after that (unless you miss pills).

Depending on when you start taking the pill (and depending on how irregular your cycles are), it will take a few months for your body to adjust to the new schedule/cycle and your bleeding will become more regular/predictable. Don't worry if bleeding doesn't fall perfectly into the pill-free (or placebo) week, just continue taking pills on schedule (bleeding or not) to continue your protection.

Yeah, you really can start whenever you want. And your pill pack may have little day of the week stickers in it so you can re-label it with the correct days.

You are protected after a week of taking the pill. As long as you take it correctly.

Also, huge kudos to you for being so responsible getting yourself on birth control, and making sure you understand your birth control before ever having sex!

Good on you! Smile

Hey, thanks
I wasn't sure If i could start any day of the month, there seems to be so much emphasis on Sunday or first day of period. So now I can start BC as soon as possible. Very
Happy and will probably go through a pack before ditching the condoms. thank you so much!

I just had to double check the whole start dates with my doc. So I called up the gyno's office this morn and they were pretty strict about the Sunday start. I don't really have special needs other than i'm irregular but they insisted Sunday start only, so I guess I have to wait Crying
or Very sad However, I asked why this was so important and didn't get a response lol Oh well, dunno that people helping in the docs office are as qualified grrr
