ok. i'm really pregnant and bored and can't sleep. i was told it's not common for your membrane to rupture prior to going into labour, and that most women have it broken for them at the hospital after they are already in labour. i was just wondering how many of the moms on here had their water break at home on their first pregnancy. lol, yeah, i'm worried mine will. i wasn't before, but my brother in law was here today and told me his wife's water broke with her first baby and she was lucky she happened to be on the toilet when it happened. he said the second time she was in bed and it made a huge mess. i wanted to put something down on the mattress today just in case and Rich thought i was being silly because our prenatal instructor said it wasn't likely to happen that way.

so.... has anyone here had it happen that way to them with their first baby?

neither lol. i had no waters so it was just baby. they tried breaking my waters but she had to stop cos she was getting too close to williams head. but while doing that the muscus plug came out instead and 30 mins later (i think) i was pushing

mine broke on its own, but i was at the hospital

the sides of my stomach felt like they were tearing apart so my mum made me go in and about 4 hours after i got there my water broke just as the nurse was starting to do an internal exam, they did not break it though, they were going to wait until 6, but it broke at 130ish and i had her at 640

if it were me i wouldnt worry, but its your choice, if you really really like your bed and you dont want to chance it, put something down

i think i read that only 10% of women have their water break before they get to the hospital.

i would definitely put something down over your mattress. it has a really strong strange smell and i wouldn't want it embedded in my mattress. we have one of those foam egg crate things so i figured that was coverage enough.

they broke mine at the hospital and it was the weirdest sensation. GUSH!

it sounds messy. i'm not particularly attached to my mattress i just don't want to have to buy a new one if it got wrecked. guess i'll just put down one of the baby's changing pads and not think about it again. you know how murphy's law works if i do that it won't happen so i can put it out of my mind and start wondering if it will happen at home depot or something, lol. or the car. or at church. Laughing Wink

it seems like it would hurt when they do it for you. Confused

i was so scared that it was going to hurt, especially when they showed me the tool they use to break it. it looks like a knitting needle with a hook on the end! i actually didn't feel a thing aside from the massive gush.

i had mine broken, so did my sister and so did my mum. It's a very strange feeling all of a sudden there's just this warm sensation then gush! out it comes Sad I was terrified to walk after they'd done mine because all i could feel was trickleing and the pads they give go to wear are huge so it felt like i had to waddle

My water broke with both pregnancies at home. That was the only way i knew i was even in labor lol, i guess i got lucky, i heard that not many womens water breaks on there own. So who knows, it started out just leaking though then more and more.

verrrrrry interesting. thanks for your answers. it almost seems even. i guess i'm just wishing something interesting would happen. i've got one day to go and i feel like i'm about to graduate or something lol. it's so dumb, but this date has been lingering on the horizon for so long (even though i had it marked down wrong by a day for half my pregnancy). i bet i'll still be sitting here waiting a week from now though. my waters broke when i was pregnant for my son. of course i was in the hospital the night b4 because i was having back contractions terrible that were 5 mins apart but because i was only 2-3 cms dilated they sent me home and i got home around 5am and then sure enough it seemed like i had just fell asleep because of all the pain and i heard something pop and i felt wet down there... i wasn't shure what happened i thought that maybe i had peed my pants lol so i went to the bathroom and changed my underwear and it just kept dripping slowly so i told my boyfriend about it and then we called my doctor and had to go in to the hospital.

I was induced and had my waters broken before they started the pitocen. (sp?)
It was very funny , because I thought he was just checking to see how dilate and effaced I was, It hurt a bit but wasn't that bad, just felt like an exam... then all of a sudden I felt this gush and started crying.
I thought it was blood. He made such a point the day before of telling me it's okay to bleed a little after an exam I was sure that that's what it was.
Then the nurse asked me what was wrong , and I said "I shouldn't be bleeding that much before I have her should I ??" and everybody laughed and told me it was my waters. Confused
I reemed him out... he just figured I'd assume that was what he was doing so he didn't bother telling me , I didn't mind that he did it, just a little notice would've been nice!!

Honestly out of the whole experience the contractions ... the pushing ... everything , my waters being broken and just leaking and leaking
out were my least favourite part!!
