Two Kids...question??
Posted: 07-23-07 17:26pm

Wow! Going from one to two kids really takes some getting use to.

I tried my first trip today and if my mother wasn't with me I wonder how I could have made it. I didn't trust putting Brian's car seat on top of the grocery cart toddler seat. I tried it but it just felt flimsy to me. I put the car seat in the cart. If my mom didn't get another cart, I would have had little to no room for food and other items.

How do you do it?? I am thinking of trying the sling again and using that during shopping trips for Brian. Any suggestions?

I feel so lame in having to ask this question.

i don't have 2 kids now (obviously), but i used to be a nanny for 4 kids. when i went to the grocery store, i'd put one twin in her carrier on the seat of the cart and i'd put the other baby in the bjorn. then i'd put the toddler in the large part of the cart and the little girl would either ride on the front or walk next to me holding on to the cart.

if you have a sling or front pack, i say use it! don't worry, you'll get used to it!

That's actually a great question. I am a mom of 2 myself. What I did was put the carseat sideways on the top of the cart, not inside. That left a little room for groceries inside the cart and a little room under the carrier. The problem you may face though is that some shopping carts are slanted, so your baby looks kinda lop-sided. If you aren't comfortable with the way that it sits, you just have to learn to shop more often. That way you don't have to get so much at one time. The sling is another option...that way you have the whole cart free. Either way it goes...shopping is just not easy with two kids ever! But it does get easier, I promise. Let me know if I can help you with anything else! Best of luck!

another option would be to go alone at night or on the weekend when your husband can watch them.

Thanks everyone! With one child, shopping was easy! I honestly couldn't imagine how difficult it would be if I had a toddler and not a four year old!

I have a front baby carrier but it works better with babies who are a little older or I just can't figure the darn thing out. I should try a sling again. I had the Maya wrap with Nathan and that was very hard to figure out - perhaps I didn't have the patience. In the meantime, I will try your suggestions. I will probably opt to go by myself when my husband is home. That would be a nice little break!!

Bridget - Nanny for 4 kids and you went shopping? You are amazing!! It sounds like you had a great system.

it depends on the cart really. some i put them on top of the infant seat cuz my carseats had that red hook and it would latch on, if the toddler seat was to wide to the point the seat was tipping back i turn it sideways in the toddler seat part. some grocery stores have the seat built on top so i would lay a blanket down and put the baby there. i personally like the sling but its a bit of a hassle cuz its a tight fit to get the baby down in and back out to put them back in the carseat.

I try not to take both of the kids shopping at teh same time. I find that it makes me terribly distracted and i always end up forgetting something. Going grocery shopping by myself feels like being on vacationLOL!

I found so many things changed with having two children. I thought the second would be easier thant the first because I had already been through everything once, but it wasn't easier. I think it is harder. I am just glad that Geneva was 4 1/2 and very independent and compliant. Also she was always willing to help.

How is Nathan adjusting? How are you adjusting? I felt sad a lot because of the amount of time i could no longer spend with Geneva. She handled it very well, without much jealousy. I think I had a harder time with it than she did. I admit, I do feel a level of guilt in having to split my attention. It certainly changed the nature of our relationship. Neither good, nor necessarily bad, just different. Sometimes it makes me a little sad.
