Undiagnosable Hip Pain For Over Year and a half !

Crying
or Very sad

I am 32 years old and started having right hip pain after a ski weekend. The pain got worse so my Dr put me on anti inflammatories. Those didn't help so I went to an Ortho and he gave me a cortisone injection. That didn't help either. In the course of the next few months I had another injection, went to a rhumetologist who did blood work that came back normal, had an MRI and did PT. The pain persisted. I was finally referred to a Dr at Stanford Hospital who had me get another cortisone injection guided by ultrasound to make sure it was in the right spot. He thought I had IT band friction syndrome. The Dr who did the injection said she saw nothing to indicate it was IT band friction syndrome. Needless to say, that injection did nothing. I had another MRI done but this was of my lower back and an xray of my hip, both were normal. Next the Dr had me get another cortisone injection in the hip joint guided by Xray and do PT again for another 6 weeks. Neither thing has helped at all.
The pain is so bad I have not been able to exercise at all, I have a hard time sleeping and playing with my two young children. It is totally affecting all areas of my life!
I have had to switch to UCLA due to insurance issues. The Dr there had me get an MRI arthrogram because he thought I had a labral tear. That came back normal also and now he wants to send me to a neurologist for pain management!
I am only 32 and the last thing I want to do is to be resolved to a lifetime of pain management
Any suggestions? Thanks!!!

Please Consider Astym

Hi there,
It sounds like you're in a lot of pain. Please consider looking into something called ASTYM therapy. Go online to the Web site and see if there is a provider near you. Either trochanteric bursitis or IT band syndrome can be helped dramatically, if not totally cured, by ASTYM.
If your doctor doesn't know about it, refer her or him to information you get online. Insurance does cover it, with a perscription.
GOOD LUCK.

The only thing I would add is that you could try an osteopathic physician. they look at teh body as a functioning whole, not just the sum of its parts. maybe you have a foot problem that is keeping off-kilter. Maybe your sacrum is misaligned. An osteopath could help you with this. Another option is to consult a physiatrist who can do nerve conduction tests and see if your pain is caused by soemthing neurological. Pain management is not as bad as it sounds, really. I got involved in pain management for a bile duct disorder. I too considered myself way too young for that, but I am able to live a completely whole life. I am able to eat, sleep, and exercise-things I was not able to do previously. That is a very frustrating problem, I wish I could pinpoint exactly what is going on for you. We have had many patients with a similar picture as yours and they eventually got better. I hope this will be the case for you as well.

Regards
