Q: Numbness

Hey ladies!
I feel like I'm going to wake up one day and my whole body is going to be numb. lol. Confused Not quite, but I've been waking up in the morning and my thighs are always numb. It usually switches between which leg wants to go numb, but right now, it's my right one. On top of that, my wrists have been killing me! They're constantly hurting, along with my right shoulder. Most the time my hands will go numb right after my wrist starts hurting. Anyone know what could be causing either the wrist/shoulder pain or the thigh numbness? Any ideas on relief? Thanks. Very Happy

P.S. Sorry if any of that was confusing, my mind just bounces around. Smile

Well I guess the thigh numbness could be from sleeping, but I'm not sleeping now and it's numb. And my shoulder just hurts constantly.

it's probably carpal tunnel syndrome. you retain a lot of fluid when you're pregnant and your circulation gets a little sluggish because things are more relaxed from the hormones. carpal tunnel causes numbness and pain in your hands usually but it can spread all the way up to your shoulder. it's caused by too much fluid in the carpal tunnel which compresses nerve bundles in your wrist. you can get braces for it which keep your wrist straight but they don't always work. there are exercises you can do that help also. it usually goes away after you have the baby. i've had it since i was about 4months or so and it gets pretty painful sometimes. there are days when i can't make a fist and i feel like my hand is being electrocuted.

oh and the numbness down below is usually just a result of the same thing. pressure from the weight of the baby and poor circulation. try elevating your feet and avoid sleeping on your back. also use pillows to prop you up in the front and back when sleeping on your side and try putting a pillow between your knees. there are maternity pillows you can try also.

Legs

It is normal to have swelling and numbness in your lower extremities, in late pregnancy. This can be due to pressure on the sciatic nerve as well as fluid build up in the lower extremity. During pregnancy, the valves in your leg (that control blood flow back to the heart from the veins) stop working and you pool fluid in your feet and lower legs. This leads to swelling and numbness in your feet. I would recommend elevating your feet as much as you can (even while working). Good Luck.

Wrist pain & carpal nerve swell during pregnancy
Wrist pain...

The Cause: "Just like feet and hands can swell in pregnancy, the 'tunnel' that the carpal nerve runs through can swell as well, putting pressure on it," explains Michael Broder, MD, author of The Panic-Free Pregnancy (Perigee). "It often develops in the third trimester, when you're most swollen." Don't worry though: Most cases subside within six months of giving birth.

The Fix: See your doctor to rule out other nerve damage and to get wrist splints that might help ease the pain. At home, elevate your hands by resting them on a pillow on a table or desk to improve circulation, or apply warm compresses on your arms at night.

Thanks so much!! It's kind of hard to elevate my arm to where my shoulder will stop hurting, but hopefully I can figure out something. And if not, I'll ask my doctor on Monday if she knows of anything that will help. Smile

try this exercise. i do it sometimes and it works a little. put your arm straight out in front of you, palm facing away from you and fingers spread a little.then, take your other hand and just pull back on your fingers a bit. that stretches them back towards you a little bit.

the second one is to make a fist with one hand and hold it in front of you. then, with your other hand out, flat, with the palm down, press down on your fist while resisting with your fist. then do the same only with palm up and pressing upward. i hope that makes some kind of sense. i find the second exercise helps when the pain gets up into my shoulder and elbow.

Thats what I have also, my midwife said it was sciatica and there really is nothing you can do about it but rest and keep your legs elevated above your heart. It sucks!
