Hyperthyroid means that your thyroid is producing too much of the thyroid hormones. It usually goes along with not being able to gain weight, protruding eyes, anxiety, heart palpitations, and an inability to sit still.
Hypothyroid is the exact opposite. Your thyroid does not produce enough of the thyroid hormones. Usually the symptoms are weight gain, fatigue and a few other things I can't remember.
Normal TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) levels are from 0.4-4.5. These values range though depending on the doctor and the lab. If you are below 0.4 then you are hyperthyroid because TSH stimulates your thyroid to release more hormones but since you already have high levels of them in your blood your thyroid is not being stimulated as much by TSH. If your TSH is higher than 4.5 then you are hypothyroid and your body isn't getting enough of the hormones.
My TSH was 0.01, so it was almost nonexistent. This was the exact opposite of what I expected it to be because I have totally opposite symptoms.
It really sucks because the one medicine I can take does have a very rare side effect on that baby but the benefits of taking it outweigh the risk. The only risk is that part of the scalp will possibly not close up but it is a very rare side effect and I am on a very low doseage to try and prevent this from happening. It is very important for your thyroid to be under control while pregnant because you can go into what is called a thyroid storm where your blood pressure can go either really high or really low and put both you and the baby at risk. It's very possible for this to happen right around when you go into labor.
So all in all, thyroid problems totally suck and please get it checked out. Let me know how it all goes Star. Oh yeah, my name is Stefanie.
