What Is Androgyny
Posted: 07-25-07 20:08pm

my five year old complaines about her private area. she has woke up with her clit swollen. i took her to the dr. they say she may be masterbating, i dont think so, and no one has touched her. her breast have developed slightly. we have even had urinalisis done they come back negative. CAN THIS BE ANDROGYNY? and HOW DO I GET HER CHECK?

Not androgyny- definitely. Androgyny is the lack of any gender, which she doesn't have. She also is probably not a hermaphrodite, (which is what you meant, when she has male parts? I think) as doctors would've noticed before now. I really don't think you need to worry. She sounds perfectly normal.

Honestly, she probably was masturbating. Kids often rub against things innocently because it feels good. It isn't necessarily masturbating like you would think of an adult doing it, more like scratching an itch. She doesn't know what it is.

Is she using bubble bath or anything? That can sometimes be irritating to the genitals, especially for girls.

Masturbation is something healthy that many young girls discover on their own.

She is a healthy little girl. What exactly was urinalysis supposed to show?

It IS very unusual (I think?) for her breasts to be developing. I think it is far more likely that she is simply gaining some child-hood weight, and this has made her chest look bigger.

The only check for androgyny is to look at her genitals... if she has them, any at all, then she's not androgynous... As the other poster said, androgyny is the LACK of sexual definition. From what you have described, it seems your 5 year old is very female.

If her breasts are developing this early, there is something wrong and she needs to get her hormones checked. (thyroid especially)

i thank u 4 your comments and info she did have hypo thyroidism but does not have it now she gets checked regularly 4 her thyroid and her hormones and nothing irregular shows up and the doctors say that "If it isn't prohibiting her growth she is fine. she definitly has NO male parts but enlarged breast is concerning me. And she is asleep when these episodes happens and she wakes up saying "ouch' and trying to go back to sleep so i make her get up to go to the bathroom and she goes. and i noticed she had this problem cause she still is holdin herself saying ouch so i tell her i will put medicine on it in the mornin so we go back to bed and it has gone down in the mornin so i leave it alone.

i don't think it is weight gain she is only 36 pounds but i do thank you for your info and she definitly does not have any male parts but the dr.s say 'if its not prohibiting her growth then she is fine and the urinalisis i was thinking it was maybe it was a urinary tract infection. but it wasn't

Glad to hear everything is okay.

I think the breast development may be due to the hypo-thyroidism.

I think this is really something that should be discussed with a pediatrician.
