...you become anxious/nervous about labor and delivery? I am 36.3 weeks and really starting to get nervous about giving birth, probably because this is my first and I have no idea what to expect. How did you calm your nerves/anxiety?

educate yourself and make a birth plan. Decide if you want medication or not. my labor was very easy and near painless because i knew i wanted a epideral..this is a total personal decision so do your research

I started to get nervous but then I reminded myself that millions of women have birthed before and it is and awesome rite of passage for us.

I read allot too so I got well informed. Also, read, listen to and talk about positive birth experiences. It is so amazing. In fact, I am excited about going into labor, not fearing it. I think it will be one of the most awe-inspiring moments of my life.

You will do awesome and everything is going to go smoothly.

I don't remember a lot of my birth with my first one. That was over 6 years ago lol. All i remember was i was home alone, and laying in bed. I started to feel crampy, and i called my mom. She asked where they were and i told her, and she said well you might be in labour. So we went into the hospital that morning at 10am, and had her the next morning at 12:45. I had a epidural (sp?) And i guess the saying does go you will forget the pain soon after. Because i don't remember much.

have you read any pregnancy books or watched any videos or anything. a prenatal class? those are some things that can really get you mentally prepared and inform you of some of what you can expect. you just have to remember how natural a process this is. think about all of the thousands of generations of mothers behind you that led to you. they gave birth and their daughters gave birth and your mother gave birth to you and now it's your turn. you can do it. you have to let go of the need to control everything and know that your body is capable. there will be people there to help you and support you and if you need medication to help with the pain they will be able to do that for you also. just remember, it's a pain that is natural and a part of the process. it isn't like getting a finger chopped off or something unnatural like that, lol it is a sign that your body is doing what it should and for some women it is a feeling of real power and strength. if you want details about the particular things that may happen, try reading some of the birth stories on the labour and delivery forum, or get a couple of books on it. it's totally natural and normal to be anxious even for moms who have done it before. just don't judge yourself or expect everything to go according to a set plan. be ready to let go and not get in the way of what your body knows how to do. read about some relaxation and breathing techniques and the pros and cons of medication and pain relief and the possible interventions that may happen. good luck!! Thanks for all of your responses. I'm not fearing labor and delivery, just a little nervous about it. I guess because I know nothing ever goes according to plan. I know what I want, but I also know that things may go completely different once things start progressing. I have read a lot of the birth stories on here and talked to several people that have given birth lately; some good deliveries, some not so good. So I definitely know both ends of the spectrum. I'm looking forward to giving birth, but then again I'm also very nervous about it. I need to just relax and take things as they come...easier said than done.

I feel the same as musikmaker. I am nervous but then I remember that women have been doing it forever. I still am a bit nervous but that does help. To be honest I am the most nervous about if I am going to be a good mother. It's kinda sad the baby's almost here and I love him so much, we live in a stable home in a stable relationship but still I doubt myself. That's my biggest issue right now. Sorry [vent]
