Science has shown itself capable both of killing and curing – on balance, for which does it have more potential?

This sounds like something out of a textbook or something.

I don't understand the question.

I agree with this argument:

"Any consideration of the modern world will reveal the fallacy of the proposition’s argument. Modern medicines have more than doubled our life expectancy, and enabled children to be vaccinated against diseases which before hand had ensured a massive rate of infant mortality, whilst the population could not be fed without fertilisers and pesticides to increase yields and machinery to collect them efficiently. Science and technology are essential to modern existence. Like any of mankind’s inventions, it must be treated with care and not abused, but it is ludicrous to condemn it in itself as a menace."

Also, I'm pretty biased. I effin love biology, chemistry, physics and all types of sciences. I defintly agree with the last sentence. Everything needs to be done and used in moderation. Science itself cannot be blamed, only the people who are using it and handling it.

Science benefits us. Period. Without it we would still be dying from small pox and the flu. It can help save lives and also (i think) should be used to help end lives quickly (for those who choose to do so). It's a good thing...

let me just throw in a few things of which this "great science" has created

guns
nuclear weapons
bombs
chemicals that can kill and be extremely hurtful to the environment
drugs

do the benefits really outweigh all the horrible things we have created?

there are a lot of drugs that weren't created but discovered and there are a lotof them, whether naturally occuring or synthetic, that have positive effects if not abused. i think it's humans that are the problem here not science. a gun won't pick itself up and shoot someone. and you won't find it growing on a tree. it took a human being to think that one up and to manufacture it then sell it to someone so they can shoot someone else. nuclear weapons were made to kill but the science behind that discovery was all about studying the basic makeup of all matter and enlightening humanity about the essence of our physical world. science is about discovery and understanding, technology is about making life easier, but both are abused by people. science and technology aren't the problem, people are.

Yes. My daughter is alive today thanks to science. I am alive today thanks to science. My dad can see again thanks to science. My house isn't 104 degrees inside thanks to science. I don't have to walk 1000 miles to find fresh water. I'd say that definately overrides the guns, bombs, etc.

I think you'd be better off phrasing your question like, has science harmed the planet more than it has benefitted it?

Obviously, humans have more creature comforts (heh) because of the discovery of science, but is it worth the price to the rest of the planet?

Both - I dont agree with animal testing, however, scientist have to experiment to find cures and medicine for diseases and illnessess.
This has helped mankind ......
Suzy - you wear make up on your face and eyes ... do you think that these aren't tested to make sure you don't go blind, or react badly to the chemicals in make up.
Science has also evolved mankind, if we didnt evolved, we would still be sitting in caves !
Nuclear power is clean - it's the distructiveness of people that use it as a weapon.....
again .. yes ... we make weapons, but if we were sat in caves, and not evolved at all, the weapon used will still kill, it just means that it's a primative rock on a stick !!

They do - or they wouldn't do it ... scientists are human, some may sound a little crazy - but then, without science - we also wouldnt have electicity, telephones, INTERNET ... communication .... Baby scans .... the list is endless of all the good things that have been discovered or invented.
