Jaw Popping Whenever I'm Cold And Wet. Posted: 07-29-07 11:06am
Hello everyone . I just found this
forum while doing some research into a jaw
problem i've been having recently. I'm
hoping I can get some kind of
answer/explanation as to why I am having
this problem. I'm also continuing my own
research.
Just for a little background; I'm 25,
healthy and from ages 8 to 13 I had
braces, headgear, the whole deal.
In the past year, whenever I'm cold and
wet (in a pool, or cold ocean water) my
jaw, on the right side, pops like crazy.
The popping occurs right in front of my
ear. It's not terribly painful when it
happens, but there is pain and
discomfort.
It's also consistent, meaning, everytime I
open my mouth, when cold and wet, my jaw
pops...everytime.
During the ages of 8-13, I was also using
headgear to correct an overbite I had and,
to some degree, still do. I've also been
in a few scuffles so far in my life, so
I've been punched in the face maybe a
handful of times (not sure if that has
anything to do with it).
I've seen a reference of something called
TMJ, related to having braces, but I
haven't done much research into that yet.
Any thoughts, advice, opinions would be
greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

i would tend to say that it is very much
related to your past teeth problems and
corrections, with this i would go to your
dentist and explain everything to them and
maybe get an ex ray which im sure they
would do after what you have said...hope
it helps!

do find a good tmj specialist. this
shouldnt be happening at anytime. do you
notice that your bite is off at all? or
that the muscles in your face are tight?
do you clench or grind?

Thanks for the responses so far guys.
To your question dyanM, yes, I would say
my bite is off, with my bottom row of
teeth sitting to the right of my top row,
rather than centered, at rest. Per the
tightness, I'm not sure how to tell that
exactly.
I chew my food on the left side of my
mouth, however, if I swich to chew food on
my right side, I find that I have half the
space/range of motion to be able to
execute a chewing/biting movement. Maybe
that is a sign of tightness?
Also, no clenching or grinding to that I
know of.

ok from what you are telling me with
muscle tightness and the bite being off I
think you should go see a neuromuscular
dentist. If you need help finding one let
me know(id just need your zip) This would
get rid of the stiffness and fix the bite
as well.
hang in there--it will get better.

Ok, my zip is 32701.
I've been reading up on TMJ, and the
symptoms of it do not sound like anything
I'm experiencing, so your suggestion
sounds more on target.
Thanks for the assistance dyanM.
