i just called to make my first prenatal
appointment and i ended up with 3!
my first one is for aug 23 and it's my
intake. i don't know what that means...
paperwork, perhaps? bloodwork?
the second is for sept 4 and that's for my
exam.
the third is for sept 19 and that's when
i'll see my doctor.
i switched to this practice halfway
through my last pregnancy so i didn't know
what to expect. 3 appointments is just
weird to me. why not combine them?
anyway, i'm hoping they'll give me an
ultrasound! if not, i hope to at least
hear the heartbeat. i'll be 9 weeks 2 days
at the second appointment and 11 weeks 3
days at the third so we'll see!

I had the intake one (all is is history
and paperwork, kinda boring), the check-up
one (initial weight, setting bp base-
again boring) and then I finally got to
meet my dr. Took awhile but I did meet
her! Then she did the first internal. That
was fun
Maybe all places do things differently- I
really don't know. This is my first
pregnancy.

Wow that does seem kinda weird.. although
over here it's all done differently
anyway.. doctors & midwives don't do
internal exams until you're in labour,
& you see a midwife throughout the
pregnancy rather than a doctor (unless
there's any problems).
At my first appointment the midwife did
the paperwork & the bloodwork &
took my bp, weighed me etc.. & it took
a maximum of like 15 minutes. I wonder why
you have to go three times!
Well, let us know what happens! =)

That's the way my appointments went. They
didn't make them all at once though. I
went it for my first appointment and they
just did a family history, my next
appointment was just for blood work and
then the third appointment was with my
actual doctor and he did the internal exam
and we got to hear the heartbeat for the
first time.

I'm still blown away that your'e preggo!
Congrats! (I didn't get a chance to post
in the other forum, sorry about all of

That's strange. At my 1st appointment I
had my exam and he told me my due date, I
also did blood work. My next appointment
was my ultrasound to confirm my due date
and do paperwork. With my dr. they
squeeze you in if you think you're
pregnant. I had an appointment in 2 days
with Ava.

I don't see why they are so spread out?
Kinda weird. I had my first one with
paperwork, and testing. Then a week, and a
half later i had my visit with the doc,
and the ultrasound. But like they said
every place is different.

They even do it differently in different
parts of the UK LOL
I had a "booking appt" where the midwife
did paper work, my height, weight, bp,
history etc and took bloodwork. (done at
doctors office) - pre 10 weeks
Then I had an appt with the consultant -
about 10 mins around 8 weeks and got the
form to book my "dating scan".
First scan done around 10 weeks, but they
thought I was a bit less (about 9 weeks)
so I was re-booked for 2 weeks later.
Then I had my second scan which gave the
same dates as the first anyway.
Then at 20 weeks I would have seen the
consultant again.
Then the midwife at 24, consultant at 28,
midwife at 30, 32, 34, consultant at 36,
38, 39, 40 and further if need be.
Nope I didn't remember that all I had to
go look up my old notes LOL

i saw the doctor at 5 weeks who arranged
for the hospital appointments. i had a
scan at 12 weeks with bloods, all the
paper work, weighing, urine tests. i saw
the midwife every couple of weeks from
then on. at 20 weeks i had my scan, urine
samples and bloods done. think i had
bloods done again a couple of times after
that as i had lack of iron. i didnt see a
doctor until i had my water infections and
then i didnt see one until i was
discharged from hospital. i only had an
internal exam when i had thrush(!) and
then when i was in labour

now i'm wondering if maybe they think i'm
a new patient. i guess i just don't get
the first appointment, if it is what i
think it is. they should already have all
my paperwork and history from finn.
well, i guess we'll see!
i'm very excited. i was actually surprised
when she said i'd be seeing my doctor at
the 3rd one. last time i didn't even meet
this woman until i was in the hospital!
she's awesome though and i'll never go to
anyone else as long as she's practicing.
she's also one of the top doctors in NH so
that makes me feel comfortable with her.
nick's excited because he works at the
hospital which is next to my doctor's
office and he'll take finn around the
hospital while i'm at my appointments. he
can't wait to parade him around and show
him off!
oh, and things seem so different between
here and the UK!

I think it's strange that ya'll don't see
the doctor right away. My doctor's there
for everything. He even does the
ultrasounds. When I got bloodwork, he
came talk to me b/c he knows that I pass
out easily. 9 years ago I passed out
after an exam and he remembers that.

my practice only has 2 doctors and they're
usually at births so we rarely see them. i
go to the lab which isn't affiliated with
the office for bloodwork, the u/s sound
room is at the office but the u/s tech
performs it, i see a nurse for pretty much
everything else.

I saw my doctor every single time. The
only thing she didn't do was my weight,
BP, & my ultrasounds. I
lovedlovedloved her. She even delivered
Gabe. But I never had my "first prenatal
appointment" cut up into 3. That seems a
bit over the top to me.
Bridget, you should call & make sure
they know you aren't a new patient. I
would be highly annoyed if I went in to
fill out paper work, filled it out, &
then realized that they didn't need it!
