Should publicly supported education
programs include the distribution of
condoms?

some parents want to be the ones to teach
their kids about sex so i think a letter
should be sent out to parents just to
inform them whats going to be taught and
that condoms maybe be available to
students and if they wish for their kids
to not be in they need to inform that
teacher/school

kinda like the dental checks at school?..
well at my school anyways
there were letters sent to each parent
saying whether they wanted
the dentist to check our teeth or not
and it was up to the parent...
that's a good idea chase..
have them be available...
but make it optional (by the parent not
the student)

even if the parents say no we all know
there are ways the kids will get them
anyways.

well, like you said maybe the parents want
to teach their kids themselves..
that's the only reason i would see it
necessary to say no..
unless the parents just want their teens
to reproduce at young ages?...

yea, i agree. I also would allow it
because it would give me a chance to fill
in the blanks of what the school may not
teach. Im glad I have 2 sisters that can
teach my daughter all the female stuff and
ofcourse her mom.

in every school ive gone to that has a sex
ed program, they do send a letter home
first and have it signed (only problem is
if the student doesnt show it to the
parent or just doesnt bring it back they
are placed in the class) ive even had it
for certain times in science classes...i
dont know if they do it everywhere, i just
wanted to let you know they do it in some
places at least
although never for condoms, ive never had
a school give out condoms, i think it
would be a good idea though, at least in
high school, because we all know it
happens and we all know kids dont wanna
spend their money on stuff like that
because they dont think its a big deal

yeah we had sex ed in our school
and they started teaching it in 5th
grade..
we never got the whole condom/birth
control speech tho.
just what the reproductive organs look
like and what they do..
but i think its a good thing b/c a lot of
girls had no idea what a period was
and luckily the school taught them b/c
they wouldn't have known what to
do when they started...

here i go again with my "when i was that
age speech". when i was in high school i
lost my virginity and my boyfriend was
smart enough to use condoms. but once
that first box of condoms ran out all of a
sudden he didn't want to get caught buying
them and he was embarrassed to be seen
buying them and he didn't have the money
to buy them and every other excuse under
the sun. of course, me being a 16 year
old girl, i wasn't smart enough at that
time in my life to either insist on it or
do it myself. so i just let him do it his
way (the pull out/non-method). luckily
this didn't go on long enough for me to
get pregnant but i guess i would have been
a lot safer if i had had access to condoms
through school. as it was, there was no
information for me and i couldn't go to my
mom (she would have killed me first and
talked later). so i think it's an okay
idea for kids to have access to
information and condoms in school.

i was like that the same way. I had my
sister buy them for me and she was like 13
or something and i was like 17, if i
remember. One time the clerk asked her
that she was so young to be buying
condoms. LMAO. But ofcourse she said they
were for me. =) i thought it was funny.

We had thorough, indepth sex/health
education (age appropriate) starting in
grade 6. No permission slips from parents
and definitely NOT abstinence only
education.
It's in the Ontario public school
curriculum (which is available for viewing
online).
Grade 6 (co-ed) - puberty/how your body is
changing
Grade 7 (co-ed) - Alcohol and drug abuse
Grade 8 (co-ed) - STDs (seemed mostly like
scare tactics to me)
Grade 9 (co-ed) - Condoms, birth control,
iuds, common misconceptions, oral sex,
anal sex, lesbian, gay and trans-gendered
people. It was of course stressed that
abstinence is the ONLY birth control
method that is 100%.
In highschool (grade 9+) condoms were
always available for free from the nurse
or health/gym teachers.
When I was in university I worked at a
club/banquet hall where some local
highschools held their prom. A giant,
salad-bowl of free condoms was placed at
the exit door of nearly every highschool
prom I worked.
I have absolutely no doubt that condoms
should be available at public
highschools.
Anyone who has thoroughly browsed this
forum can see that sex education is
severely lacking (more so in some areas) -
and teens are the ones who suffer the
consequences of their own ignorance.
Education doesn't make people more likely
to have sex - but ineducation makes sex
far more risky.
Kids should be educated about sex,
pregnancy, birth control and stds by the
time they're in highschool. If parents
don't want their child to receive such
education they can homeschool or place
their kids in a private or religious
highschool (catholic school is free here
too).

Safe Sex

Well if they can get them free at school
atleast they have a better chance of
having safe sex. I would much rather see
those that decide to have sex when they
are like 14 using condoms, even if they
get them at school, then just doing it,
then getting an abortion when they end up
pregnant.

i dunno, i just think its too young
personally..but..I do support the whole
safe sex thing...its a toss up for
me..while I agree that safe sex should be
performed I also think that its just too
young to be handing out condoms, its like
they're promoting sex...so, I think the
information should be sent out but...I'm
gonna have to say that just giving them
out, no..if you're old enough to have sex,
you should be RESPONSIBLE enough to know
the consequences and how to prevent themby
birth controls...if you dont care..then
obviously you aren't mature enough

Condoms were available from my school if
you went to your student suppost assistant
then they would give them to you. I
understand why parents would be angry
about it but i think they'd be even more
angry if their daughter came home pregnant

I think they should absolutely be
available to students. And I think sex ed
should be a lot better (at least where I
am). I think having a permission slip
sent home completely defeats the puropse
of having condoms at school. If kids had
their parent;s permission to do it, they
wouod be supplying their kids with
condoms. I woud much much rather my kid
had condoms without my knowledge than had
contracted and STD.

I dont think the answer to problem of
underage sex and teen pregnancy lies in
current sex education programmes or in the
distribution of Condoms. To be fair the
distribution of condoms sends out a
message of consent from the school, from
parents and from society. Therein lies the
root of the problem and the answer to the
problem. Society seems to be hell bent on
the promotion of sexual promiscuity at an
early age.
Everything from magazines, advertisments
and music video's to the distribution of
free condoms to underage children at
school. If we want to curb the sexplosion
of underage sex and teen pregnancy we need
to re-evaluate how our society approaches
sex, sex education should be based on
biological facts not on "how to" Oral,
lesbian, Gay. Sex education should be
based on the biological facts of
reproduction and not about the karma
sutra!
I am not a one for "banning" but for
liberating, Regards to the media, I would
open the media up allowing for alternitive
music videos, magazines and advertisment
agencies... our whole culture is tits up
and we have no alternitive to either
totally abstain from the media (as I do)
or be force fed this depravity. Often our
work commitments forces us to scarafice
our children to this so called
"entertainment" which then they become
"sexualised" at an early age, contributing
to promiscuity, sexpermientation, teen
pregnancy and of course abortion, alcohol
and drug abuse, depresion and suicide.

That's it, I have made my decision. I vow
to move to Canada before I have children.
Hubby better find a new job.
Our sex education consisted of teaching us
"how to say no" and why std's were so
horrible. Ok- so we did learn how to put
condoms on, and there were rumors that
condoms were available somewhere. But we
didn't learn about birth control (not even
the pill), and certainly not about
oral/anal/lesbian/gay/transgendered sex.
Thank god I had a nice open mom who could
teach me what I actually needed to know.
(She even lectured me on peeing after sex
so I wouldn't get a bladder infection,
lol)
I think that condoms should definitely be
available in school. They're gonna do it
anyway!!! If I had children, I would much
rather they were protected than ignorant.
And it's true- if you look at these
forums, there are tons of young people who
have NO IDEA how to protect themselves or
the truths about sex. Why not?? I agree
that parents need to step it up and teach
kids themselves, but learning it in public
and making sex health a public issue will
only strengthen our society and make it a
healthier place to be.
